It was a while ago but I visited the Mt. Kirigamine area in September. It is an unique area covered by grass and it looks like British countryside albeit the grasses are much taller being Miscanthus sinensis . Unlike Britain, we didn't and do not keep many livestocks and we have plenty of rainfall to encourage succession so grassland is very rare.   But this area was maintained by people coming in to cut those tall grasses for thatching and feedstuff.

While sketching this, more than ten jays flew passed my view. They must have been migrating.

(Yashima bog)

When I show the above sketch, my mother brought out my old drawing of the same mountains, Yatsugatake, which I made at the age of seven after our scary mountain climbing trip.  We almost died at steep rocky slope of Mt. Akadake.

  1. The old drawing is such a pleasure to see! At seven! You are a marvel, Tingchan :)

How nice that your proud mother kept her young daughter's drawings!

    1. Colin, I was really surprised to see it again! We are keeping a booklet I made after the same trip, too.
