Birds and berries

When I was researching for my graduation thesis, I got a book called "Birds and Berries" by Snow & Snow, illustrated by John Busby(!!). It is a monograph about the studies held in the southern part of England to record all the bird species which ate all the berries species there. Because I was doing the research similar to their works in a small scale, I often referred to the book, imagining the birds in England eating berries.
And now, I can actually see them around my house!



Blackberry(Rubus fruticosus) セイヨウヤブイチゴ
Blackberries are everywhere, along the river, at the edge of the common lands but somehow I don't see many birds eating the berries. It may be because, as written in the book, there are double peaks for the birds to eat Blackberries; early September and late October. And it's the time in between now.



Elder(Sambucus nigra) and Collard Dove　セイヨウニワトコとシラコバト
If it's the same case as that in southern England, the reason for the Blackberries' double peaks here must be these attractive Elder berries.
It seems that most of the Elder berries were already eaten up around here, though.
シラコバトは、種子を散布せずに破壊しているに違いないけれど・・・。

Hedgehog

ナミハリネズミ(European Hedgehog)
When I was watching birds in a cemetery nearby, a lady taking her dog for a walk beckoned to me. The big brown ball which she was pointing at was a hedgehog!
She told me that it was the first time for her to see it in the cemetery.

British Hedgehog Conservation SocietyのHogwatchという調査によれば、イギリスでは西部より東部の方が数が多いらしい。しかし東部でも近年、数を減らしているという。
この個体は大きいからオスだろうと言われたが・・・それにしても、ハリネズミってもっと小さいものを想像していた。

ソルト＆ビネガー味

賞味期限が切れたのに、まだ使い切れていない牛乳をカテージチーズにすべく、近くのインド人店にお酢を買いにいった。オーナーが外国人だと夕方遅くまでやっているのでありがたい！何しろデパートやショッピングモールはもちろんのこと、17時には閉まってしまうお店が非常に多いのだ。
そしてついでに･･････ヤマセミさんおすすめのソルト＆ビネガー味のポテトチップスも買ってみた。今日はビネガーの日だ。



すっぱい！！！というのが一番の印象。たくさん食べたらげんなりしそうですが、根詰めて何かをしているときのお供にはよさそう、と思いました。
Today I bought a bag of potato crisps, which is unusual thing for me. It was just because I was asked to try the Salt & Vinegar flavor of that.
Searching through the Internet, I learned that the Salt & Vinegar flavor is not sold in Japan! I didn't know that...I have to check supermarkets when I go back.

Blackbird

From my window, I often see a blackbird resting in the Ivy. During winter, I should be able to see them eating the berries!

Field work

とうとう授業がはじまった。最初のモジュールは、あるテーマを決めて出来る限りたくさんスケッチをするというもの。昨日は朝10時から夕方6時まで、友達とスケッチに明け暮れた。
去年はフィールド調査、今度はフィールドスケッチ。結局、やっていることはあまり変わらない。じっと同じ場所にいて寒いというのも相変わらずだ。

Moorhen

When I tell people that I love bird watching, they always ask me "What is the black bird with long legs and something red on its face? I saw them the other day."



It is Moorhen.
I was surprised to find so many of them walking on the lawn, sitting on the punts in Cambridge. Because in Japan, it is rather shy and wants to hide in the reed.

Fish & chips

Food & Garden Festival
イギリス風景式庭園から生まれたという芝生広場。普段は数人が座って何かを食べたり、フットボールやクリケットをする場になっていて、年に数度はフェスティバルの会場になる。一見、無駄なようでいて地域のなかで重要な位置を占めている場所なんだろう。



We tried fish and chips for our lunch as an experience! One dish was more than enough for two of us...

Sunday

Last Sunday, I went to Grantchester, a village 5 kilometer away from Cambridge with my friend. It was so much fun to walk along the River Cam, through the meadows, watching people punting and having a picnic meal.
牛が放牧されている牧草地をみんなが散歩している。土地区画ごとにあるキッシングゲートをいくつも抜けて、どこまでも続く牧草地をわたしたちものんびりあるいた。イギリスには"right of way"という、昔から人が行き来していた小道は、私有地でも国有地でも通り抜けることができる権利が存在するようだ。コモンズのひとつらしい。



We had nice tea at the orchard. I'm really enjoying my stay in England!

My home

When I first came in here, I was surprised and shocked to find that nobody had arrived in the house yet. But now most of my housemates have moved in and the house is full of life, looks like home!
一生に一度でも、こんなイギリス風の家に住めるのはうれしい！お隣の青いドアとツタがちょっとうらやましかったりする。

寮はどこも男女混合、学部生も院生もいる。でもわたしの家は、いまのところ全員わたしより年上で、けっこう快適そうだ。全員が一年生ということは、来年もいられるものなのかどうかよくわからない。

Robin

何を買うにも、何をするにも誰かに聞かないことには何もできない。真っ白いキャンバスに描きはじめるときは大変だ。
買い物のついでに川まで行ってみたら、キイチゴ類やズミ？がたくさん実っていて、アオガラやエナガが集まっていた。どこに行っても鳥はいる。



European Robin(ヨーロッパコマドリ)
今朝、チチ、チチという声で飛び起きたら、寮の窓からコマドリが見えた！うん、ここなら暮らしていけそうだ。
がらくた屋で、カレンダーの切り抜きか何かのコマドリの絵を見つけた。額付きで50ペンス。さっそく机の横に掛けてみた。



Wood Pigeon（モリバト）
どうやらイギリスにはドバトはあまりいないようで、代わりにモリバトがドゥッドゥドゥードゥーとあちこちでさえずっている。
