Birdwatching days

Last week, I had quite a few chances to go out birdwatching. I love going out alone and watching birds on my own pace, sketching. But there is something about birdwatching with friends or in a group.

Just before I came to England, a photographer told me at a party that Norflok is one of the best place to look for the barn owl. And I remember writing down "Norfolk, Barn Owl" somewhere in my notebook. At that time, I didn't imagine me going to Norfolk as often as I have and watching Barn Owl so many times!

花束

わたしにとって、花束といえばピアノだ。年末の発表会でもらったり、伯母のコンサート後におこぼれがうちに回ってきたりしたものが、玄関や食卓に飾られていた。小学生の頃は、よくそれらを母と一緒に描いていた気がする。



イギリスに来て、そんな発表会やコンサートでもない、日常のちょっとした機会に花束をもらう。イギリス紳士は、何かというとさらっと花束を買ってしまったりするのだ。
実際に暮らしてみると、決して映画や小説で想像するイギリス、イギリス人のイメージとは違うことがわかってくるけれど、花束を贈るというのは､本当にイギリスに根付いた文化のようだ。女の子二人が暮らしている家に行くなら花束を持って行こうっという発想は、日本人にはあまりない気がする。

This was my first trial of reduced linocut. First, I carved the brown layer, printed and then I carved the same linosheet further more to make the black layer. This way, I can print exactly on top of the brown layer (if the registration goes well) and I can save expensive linosheet and precious time. But I will never be able to print any more than I produced brown-layer-print at a time!
It was scary and thrilling to start carving the black layer, destroying the one I have made spending so much time. In some way this is a "live art."

イギリス乗馬倶楽部

先日の記事でも紹介したイギリスでの乗馬体験の斡旋をするイギリス乗馬倶楽部のロゴ制作をやらせていただいた。
イギリスは乗馬の地でもある。アスコットやニューマーケットの競馬だけでなく、個人で馬を持っていて、趣味で乗っている人も少なくない。海岸や大きな公園などにバードウォッチングに行くと、目の前を馬に乗った一団が通り過ぎることもよくある。
そんな乗馬の本場で馬に乗りたくなったら、ぜひイギリス乗馬倶楽部へ！



I designed a logo for the Igirisu Joba Club, an agent which helps Japanese people to experience horseback riding in Britain. I hope more and more people will enjoy wonderful British countryside!

Lancashire

We visited Lancashire for a few days. Our friend kindly took us to Clitheroe, driving through the Forest of Bowland and then to Lancaster.
It was a few days after the snow fall so the ground was covered in white and in the afternoon we had blue sky with the bright sun! The scenery was spectacular.



Coal tit and the Pendle Hill from the Clitheroe castle. We saw a family of red grouse, a goldcrest, kestrels and a buzzard in the Forest of Bowland as well!

そういえば高校時代、地理の授業でイギリスの産業はペニン山脈の東西で大きく異なることを習い、「らーめんまんのよーよーり−」だと覚えさせられた。
ペニン山脈西のランカシャー地方は綿（めん）工業でマンチェスターが主要都市。東のヨークシャー地方は、羊毛（ようもう）工業でリーズが主要都市。当時はラーメンとヨーヨーのイメージしかなかったけれど、今でもこうして覚えているのだから、良い授業だったのかもしれない。

最近の制作物

同じように絵本作家を目指している大親友と同じ屋根の下に住んでいるけれど、普段は日の出前から夜中まで自分の部屋で作業をしていて、ほとんど会話もしないし、ご飯も勝手にそれぞれに済ませている。一緒に住んでいるのに食事も供にしないで、夜にのんびりテレビを見たり話したりする時間も取らないなんて、相当な変わり者だと、いろんな人から言われる。でも、そんな優雅な生活を楽しんでいる場合ではないという切迫感が二人の間にはいつもある。
出版してもらえるかどうかも分からない絵本作り、ポートフォリオを充実させるための絵やイラストの制作は、わたしたちにとっては「本業」だけれど、世間一般から見れば、まだ「趣味」の領域だ。
だからもちろん、いますぐお金になるバイトや小さな仕事をたくさんこなして、その合間の「余暇」に、自分の制作をしなくてはならない。何かを作るのには時間がかかる。それにくわえて日々、遊び時間を設けるわけにはいかないのだ。
どうせイギリスで遊んでいるんでしょうってみんなから思われている気がする、と友達。でもむしろ、移動中も電車の中の人をモデルにデッサンの練習をしたりして、ひとときも完全な休憩時間を設けていないのが、わたしたちだ。他のアーティストは、スタート時はどんな生活をしていたのだろう、と時々気になる。

Fiction, Non-fiction

Recently, I started to focus on a story idea about Gannets.
Why do you always make a story about such a strange subject! Try making something a little more general and commercial...people would say. Well...I could not forget the trip to Bass Rock that I did last June and this was something what I really want to make!



But this is more like a fictional story although fundamentally, it is a non-fiction. It is always the matter to me. I want to make a non-fiction book but at the same time I don't want it to be a science book.



I still don't know my position yet. Do I want to be a children's book illustrator? or a scientific illustrator? or a wildlife artist? or rather a nature interpreter? a journalist? But a title doesn't mean anything.

出会い

海外に住んでいると、同じ異国に住んでいる日本人というだけで、遠い知り合いの知り合いとコンタクトをとりはじめたりする。昨日もそんな出会いがあった。ここから何かが生まれそうな予感。人の縁は不思議だ。
