Enchanted Rock

　This is the last article on our trip to the U.S.A.
　We climbed a large monadnock, Enchanted Rock, located in the north of Fredericksburg.

　At the flat summit of the Enchanted Rock, there were some puddles, where cactuses and some grasses were growing.

　Enchanted Rockは、エアーズロックのようなモナドノック（残丘）だ。テキサス・ヒルカントリーといえどなだらかな土地に、どーんと転がっている一枚岩。まわりから130メートルほど盛りあがっている、10億年前の岩と書いてあった。アメリカで2番目に大きい残丘で、１番はジョージア州にあるStone Mountainだという。高校の地理では、ニューハンプシャーのモナドノック山とモニュメントバレーを残丘の例として覚えさせられたけれど、この2つは出てこなかった。なんでだろ？

　岩は建築にも使われるピンク色の花崗岩（Pink granite)でできており、昼夜の気温差による物理的風化が見られる。地質学者に説明してもらったら、もっとおもしろかったに違いない。

　I saw a Canyon Wren（ムナジロミソサザイ） only a few feet away, which lives in a rocky area.
　
　

Fredericksburg

　サン・アントニオの北にある小さな町、フレデリクスバーグで1泊した。小さなお店やレストランがたくさんあるドイツ系の町だ。

　カウボーイハットのおじさんを描きはじめたのに、いつのまにかモデルがいなくなってしまった……。

　Five kinds of beer brewed at a German restaurant. When we were eating dinner, a former cowboy came to our table with a surprised look, saying "You are so small yet you eat so much!"

　When I showed my sketches at a jewelry shop, the owner liked them so much and gave me the Texas Lone Star pendant!

Pumpkins

　We dropped at Luling to see the oilrigs. Each oilrig had a different cartoon figure such as bird, baseball boy and so on.
　
　At Luling we found a shop selling lots of pumpkins for Halloween. When I was drawing pumpkins, the owner of the shop gave me his card, asking me to show it to the other people with my painting. I bought three little pumpkins there.

　サン･アントニオで泊めていただいた家。Live Oakの大きな木が庭に何本もあり、なぜか地面に向かって枝が垂れ下がっている。

Prairie

　We went to San Antonio and Texas Hill Country for three days. Going on the free way, I was gazing at the endless prairie all the while.

　どこまでも続くまっ平らな大地。地平線が360度見えるのだ。空がとてつもなく大きい。

Kingwood

　泊めていただいた家の裏は林で、小道が通っている。この通りの住民は、裏庭を抜けてウォーキングやサイクリングに行くことができるのだ。家と家が背中合わせになり、ぎっちりフェンスで囲ってある日本ではありえない、不思議な出会いのありそうな空間だった。とはいっても、実際には息を切らしながらエクササイズしている太ったおばさんばっかり。
　それでも動物との出会いは多かった。全長42ｃｍのキツツキ、エボシクマゲラ(Pileated Woodpecker)や、トウブハイイロリス(Grey squirrel)、オジロジカ(White-tailed deer)、ヌマチウサギ(Swamp rabbit)などだ。

　During the trip, I took a lesson of watercolor painting. I painted this picture using some of the new techniques, but it was difficult with a different sheet of paper.

　Trumpet vine　（アメリカノウゼンカズラ）
なんの実だろうと思って近づくと、ノウゼンカズラだった。あれ、中国原産ではなかったっけ？　帰ってから調べてみると、これはアメリカノウゼンカズラで、庭先でよく見かける黄色みが強いものが中国産のノウゼンカズラだった。
　

Birds in America Part2

　A bird specialist friend kindly took us to the Gulf on Thursday. Texas is said to be one of the best places for birdwatching. I saw 37 new birds in just one day!

　Brown Pelican (カッショクペリカン）
It was a funny sight to see pelicans floating among the waves all facing one direction.

　Anhinga （アメリカヘビウ）　
Anhingaとは、南米の先住民の言葉で"水七面鳥"という意味だという。

　Lark Sparrow　（ヒバリヒメドリ）

　Forster's Tern (front), Sandwich Tern (middle), Black Tern (back)　
手前からメリケンアジサシ、サンドイッチアジサシ、ハシグロクロハラアジサシ）
日本名にすると何とも長い。ハシグロクロハラアジサシは日本では、きわめてまれな旅鳥らしい。

Birds in America Part1

　I saw about 60 kinds of new birds in the U.S. because American birds are totally different from those in Japan.
　
　Ruby-throated Hummingbird 　（ノドアカハチドリ）庭のハミングバードフィーダーにやってくる。いつも同じ枝に止まるのがおもしろい。
　
　Northern Cardinal　（ショウジョウコウカンチョウ）　
　I envy Americans because they can see these bright red birds in their backyards!

　Great Blue Heron （オオアオサギ）

Texas U.S.A.

　ハリケーンにも、テロリストにもあわず、無事にアメリカから帰ってきました。心配してくださった方、ありがとうございます！
　
　I went to Texas, U.S.A. with my mother to visit her ex-host parents for 10 days. Since we stayed at their house, I experienced a lot of things that I could have never done if I had stayed at a hotel.

　膝根を持つ杉。母のホストマザーはパステル画家なので、影響されてパステルで描いてみた。
　
　Fresh water oyster shell probably left by a raccoon. On the second day, I got up at 6:30 in spite of jet lag to join a local Saturday morning birding.

　Golden silk orb weaver. Somehow the outer line of its web is made of yellow strings.

帰還（Back home）

Cape Kasari: the northernmost cape of Amamiohshima.
　奄美大島に来た大きな目的のひとつ、田中一村美術館を訪ねた。奄美の自然を実際に見たあとで作品を見ると、また違った印象をうける。

　知人のおかげで、出発前に北部の海をめぐることができた。旅の終わりを告げるように、天気も下り坂だったけれど、最後の最後まで密度の濃い旅行になった。

　あまりに印象的な旅だったから、いまだに夢のなか。そして、また明日から旅立ちます！
From tomorrow I'm going on a trip again.

海（sea）

　８月３１日、クッカルーの声で目を覚ました。奄美の方言でアカショウビンのこと。"クッカルー"とは鳴かないだろう、と思っていたけれど、朝聞いてみると、なるほどクッカルーだった。

　朝の散歩で見つけたアカテガニの死体。
ハブがいるので、ちょっとした散歩にもハブ避け棒を持って行く。森に入っていけないのは残念だけれど、ハブのおかげで、これだけの自然が残ったのかもしれない。そう思えば、ハブがいてこその奄美だ。

　強い日差しに青い海。
When I looked into the sea from a pier, a lot of colorful fishes caught my eyes. I don't know much about fish but I found the Balloonfish（ハリセンボン）, the Redfin Butterflyfish（ミスジチョウチョウウオ）, and the Moolish Idol（ツノダシ）.
　
　小学校４年生と変わらないね、と言われつつも貝を拾った。悔しいから名前くらい調べようと思ったのに、ぜんぜんわからない。右の絵の左上の貝はマガキガイのようだ。もし名前がわかったら、教えてください。
