Snow, the natural reflector

Yesterday was a bright day after the heavy snow storm on Saturday. They said that it was the heaviest snow in Tokyo in the last 45 years! When I opened the door in the morning, everything was indeed buried under 20-30 cm of snow.
「鳥の暮らし発見隊」に参加しようと、雪の観察の森に向かった。道も林床もいちめん真っ白で、長靴の丈ぎりぎりまで足が雪に埋もれる。地面が数十センチ高くなるので、見慣れた木々や道標が短く見える。バス停からセンターまで、誰かがつけてくれた足跡の上を一歩一歩たどっていった。林光のオペラ「森は生きている」の一シーン、兵隊とむすめがそりを引いて森の中を歩く歌がうかんできた。
「これでいい、さあ出発だ。おれが先にゆくから、おまえはあとからおれの足跡の上を歩いておいで」
「ええ、そうするわ！」
たしかにこんなに雪が深いと、誰かの足跡の上を歩ける、ありがたさがある。



I couldn't help painting this memorable scene after coming back home in the late evening, before I forget the colour. The black-faced buntings were feeding on the snow and their yellow bellies were shining beautifully with the reflection of the snow. Everything looked colourful and pure in the monotone background and with the bright white lighting from the ground. Snow really has a magical effect to the scenery.

イギリスの自然保護区とバードウォッチャー

22日（土）に行徳野鳥観察舎で「イギリスの自然保護区とバードウォッチャー」についてお話させていただきます。



I am going to talk about my birdwatching experience in the UK at a nature reserve! I was so impressed with British nature reserves and how people enjoy visiting those places. And I am happy to get this chance to share what I've seen and heard.

◇◆◇ 野鳥観察舎公開講座 ◇◆◇
「イギリスの自然保護区とバードウォッチャー」
日時：2014年2月22日10-12時
場所：行徳野鳥観察舎1階視聴覚室 （千葉県市川市福栄4-22-11）
内容： バードウォッチング発祥の地であり、自然保護が盛んなイギリスでのバードウォッッチング事情、設備の整った自然保護区の様子、イギリス人の自然観など、留学先ケンブリッジでの体験をもとにお話しします。ケンブリッジが位置するイースト・アングリア地域は、英国内でも最もバードウォッチング、自然保護活動が盛んなところです。ソリハシセイタカシギやヨーロッパチュウヒ、サンカノゴイ、クロヅルの保護など長年続いてきた活動の成果が、フィールドでいま実感できる地域でもあります。留学中に知り合った多くの地元バードウォッチャーに連れていってもらった場所のこと、教えてもらったことをまとめてお話したいと思います。

Birdwatchers' gathering

Birdwatching can really connect people. Today, I went to see birds with six other people in my local nature reserve. I only knew two of them in the beginning, who I got to know just a few days ago, and I met the other four for the first time. And I have no idea what was common among us. But what's the matter about it when we all are birdwatchers/nature lovers, and are in the field? I had wonderful time chatting about birds, sharing the moment in nature.



ヤマシギ（Woodcock)
どういう縁あってか集まった仲間と、地元で平日探鳥会。いつも訪ねたいと思いつついきそびれていた公園で、スター種をのんびり観察。こういう人との縁と時間は大切だ。
I always think of both the woodcock and the snipe to be flying in the sky with the strange sounds. I always loved the moment sitting quietly in the opening of the woodland waiting for nightjars. And there were always woodcocks flying in circle around us above the conifer trees. And who can forget the snipe's "bicycle pump" calls and the display flight?
But today, in winter, they were both very quiet and so blended in fallen leaves and branches. Very good model for drawing, though!



タシギ(Snipe)
When I start sketching, I never really think of where on the sketchbook I should started. I seem to start wherever the space my hand goes... and so often I regret that I should have started somewhere slightly up in the middle or right or left. This one, I couldn't draw the legs properly because that was my paper's end! Stupid me!



コジュケイ（Chinese bamboo partridge）



川沿いを自転車で走っていると、ハシブトガラスの群れが目に入った。どうやらカモ？の死骸に群がっているようだ。カラスがゴミではなくて、ちゃんとこういうところで餌を採っているのはよいことなのだろう。



強い（と思われる）個体はいつも餌の上に陣取っていて、弱いやつは横から隙をみてはおこぼれに預かろうとしているようだ。足の動きがおもしろくて、30分近くも観察＆スケッチしてしまった。描いているときは夢中で、ふと気づくと凍えている。

フィールドスケッチ会

少し前から、ヒヨ吉さんとフィールドスケッチ会を開きたいとお話していた。フィールドで生きている生き物をフィールドで描く仲間を増やしたいと思ったからだ。
1月21日、まずは「下見」と称して、ふたりで不忍池にフィールドスケッチにでかけた。



On the 21st Jan, some persimmons were still left and lots of brown-eared bulbuls and White- cheeked Starlings as well as tree sparrows, white-eyes and a brown-headed thrush were gathering there.

これはヒヨ吉さんにお借りした万年筆で落書きしたスズメ。普段、自分が使わない画材を拝借して試せるのも、こういうスケッチ会の魅力になりそうだ。



そしてまず手始めに、フィールドスケッチ会用のブログを立ち上げてみた。会の様子や参加者のその日の成果をアップするサイトにしていけたらと思っている。
My friend and I are planning to organise a field sketching group and I have just made the group's blog here. We are planning to have the very first field sketch event in the beginning of the March and we will put the participants' artworks on this blog. I am trying to be active and do something on my own here in Japan and not just missing the Seabird Drawing Course in Scotland!!

◆◇◆　第1回フィールドスケッチ会　◆◇◆
日時：2014年3月8日(土) 10:00-15:00
集合：上野不忍池の弁天堂前　10:00
14時頃にカフェ等に移動し、お互いに作品を見せ合い、コメントし合う、お披露目会を考えています。一緒にスケッチしましょうという会で、絵が上手い必要はありませんが、教えられる先生がいるわけでもありません。

持ち物：
・ お昼ご飯
・ スケッチに必要なもの（スケッチブック、画用紙等、鉛筆、色鉛筆、チャーコール、ペン、水彩、アクリル絵の具、クレヨン、パステルなど、各自適当と思われる画材）
・ 観察道具として双眼鏡があるとよい
・ 防寒着（帽子、マフラー、絵を描きやすい手袋等も忘れずに）

雨天：中止。前日のPM6時の天気予報で降水確率が40%以上だった場合は中止とします。

Winter birds

I had a birdwatching weekend, one day as a job and one day for fun.



茶色い枯れ木の中で一点、鮮やかな黄緑が目立つ。ウスタビガの繭だ。下に大きな穴があいていて、中は空っぽだった。

アキニレでお食事中のベニマシコ。「草木の実をたべているときはおしゃべりをしないのがマヒワのマナー」と鳥のおもしろ私生活で読んで覚えていたが、ベニマシコも同じマナーらしい。



アトリ(Brambling) It was my first sighting of the brambling this year.



シロハラ（Pale thrush）
People says that this year, we have less winter visitors and I do feel the same. But some are there if we look for them carefully!

Cabbages and Snow

I spent a memorable long weekend at Iori village in Otari, Nagano, where everything was covered under a meter of snow.



縁あって東京農大の武生雅明先生が借りていらっしゃる小谷の古民家に遊びに行く機会を得た。家に入るにも、車を止めるスペースを確保するにも、まずは雪かきをしなければならない豪雪地帯だ。先生自作のロケットストーブの周りで暖をとる生活。家に帰ってスケッチブックを開けたら、まだ煙の匂いがした。



I wanted to paint water colour out in freezing snow. Because I was so inspired by Darren Woodhead, who told me his experience of painting outside in Norway in winter. He said he had to heat the water bottle to paint, yet the minute he put the brush on the paper, the colour started to freeze and he could get ice marks on the painting surface. I wouldn't be that brave to try painting in such circumstances but at least, I pulled out my water colour in the snow. And yes! I could get those ice marks on my paper, where snow dropped on my paint. Although since it was not as cold and I flaccidly went inside right after I got the rough sketch, the ice on the paper melted and not many of those marks remained. Anyway, I tried and it was fun! (and very cold indeed.)



I stayed in an old Japanese cottage, which is renovated all by hand by an associate professor at Tokyo University of Agriculture. He even made a rocket stove by himself! It was primitive and hard but very beautiful lifestyle.
ここで学生が何もない中で生活する力をつけ、ライフスタイルや人生の目的について考えてくれたらと思って、このプロジェクトをはじめたのだと先生はおっしゃってた。ここで大学の研究室時代を過ごしたら、世界を見る目が変わりそうだ。



繭玉をどんど焼きで焼いて食べた。
Mochi decoration for Koshogatzu (15 th Jan) made of rice flower. For this one, people dyed the mochi with turmeric and curry powder (yellow) and cacao powder (brown.)
That evening, we had Dondo bonfire. People piled up grasses and decorations for New Year such as pine branches and rice straw ropes, and lit the huge stack after the sunset. We baked this mochi on the bonfire and had them.



この地域の名産、雪中甘藍（越冬キャベツ）。
The last day, we went out with a shovel in hand to the field and started digging the snow in the certain area. Digging and digging about a meter, the snow looked transparent and here we dug out fresh green cabbages! It was such a joy and what a contrast of colour it was! The vivid light green balls in a pure white snow field!



寒さで糖分が増して甘いキャベツ。生で味噌をつけて、いくらパリパリ食べても飽きない。

お正月

This year I did several New Year's things, being Japanese! It's a relief to have no deadline for the assignments on the forth of Jan!



The first sun of 2014 at the nearby croft. There are not many places where we can see the open horizon. So even though it was just a small field, several families gathered around. An old lady stood right in the middle to praise the first sun. Many people said she was in their way to take photos but I decided to put her in my sketch.
初日の出。今年の初鳥はカワラヒワだった。



せっかくなので、箱根駅伝を見に1号線まで降りた。1位の東洋大はぶっちぎりに速くて、なかなか次の2位の選手が来ない。そのあと3位までもずいぶん間があった。テレビで見た方が選手の様子はよほどよく見えるけれど、実際にどんなスピードで走っているのかや、選手と選手の間にどのくらい時間差があるのかは、沿道に立って見送らなければわからない。
My house is very close to the natinal route 1 or Tokaido road and every new year, Hakone Ekiden, a round-trip Tokyo-Hakone relay road race among university students is held on this road. So I went down to watch and cheer the runners passing by. Of course, I drew them!



数年前に友達からお正月の飾りにもらったセンリョウに根が生えたので庭に植えたのが、今年はしっかり実をつけた！

A Happy New Year!

あけましておめでとうございます。
สวัสดีปีใหม่
It was very special to spend the New Year’s Day in Japan with my mother and grandmother. The New Year holiday in Japan is just like Christmas in the UK, very family oriented time.



This image was the view on the train from Cambridge to London in 2010. Snow fell during the night and whole field was covered with snow. A party of ten or more people was trotting in the cold, fresh air. I felt that I was in a fantasy.
午年の一年、楽しく駈けられたらと思う。
今年もどうぞよろしくお願いします。

Happy Christmas

I wish you a wonderful Christmas!



This sketch is from the Christmas last year. I wish I was going back to Cambridge for Christmas! The three Christmases I had in England were all gorgeous memories.
I can not find any of those Christmasy things like the real spruce tree or Christmas pudding, panattoni, mince pies, stilton, crackers with paper crowns or a big Father Christmas chocolate here in Japan. But I insisted on buying brussel sprouts, at least!
イギリスの家では、とても良い匂いのする、本物のドイツトウヒの木を飾った。キャンドルには本当に火も入れた。もちろんツリーの前でくつろいでいる間だけだが。



This year, I was in Christmas mood as early as the last day of May. Because that day I received an e-mail with the subject "Happy Christmas." It was from the editor of the Atlantis verlag in Switzerland offering a book deal for my Christmas story which I showed in Bologna. I am still working on it but almost there to finish the actual artworks! So it is indeed a very happy Christmas for me. The book should be out sometime in late summer next year.
