最近の制作物

同じように絵本作家を目指している大親友と同じ屋根の下に住んでいるけれど、普段は日の出前から夜中まで自分の部屋で作業をしていて、ほとんど会話もしないし、ご飯も勝手にそれぞれに済ませている。一緒に住んでいるのに食事も供にしないで、夜にのんびりテレビを見たり話したりする時間も取らないなんて、相当な変わり者だと、いろんな人から言われる。でも、そんな優雅な生活を楽しんでいる場合ではないという切迫感が二人の間にはいつもある。
出版してもらえるかどうかも分からない絵本作り、ポートフォリオを充実させるための絵やイラストの制作は、わたしたちにとっては「本業」だけれど、世間一般から見れば、まだ「趣味」の領域だ。
だからもちろん、いますぐお金になるバイトや小さな仕事をたくさんこなして、その合間の「余暇」に、自分の制作をしなくてはならない。何かを作るのには時間がかかる。それにくわえて日々、遊び時間を設けるわけにはいかないのだ。
どうせイギリスで遊んでいるんでしょうってみんなから思われている気がする、と友達。でもむしろ、移動中も電車の中の人をモデルにデッサンの練習をしたりして、ひとときも完全な休憩時間を設けていないのが、わたしたちだ。他のアーティストは、スタート時はどんな生活をしていたのだろう、と時々気になる。

Fiction, Non-fiction

Recently, I started to focus on a story idea about Gannets.
Why do you always make a story about such a strange subject! Try making something a little more general and commercial...people would say. Well...I could not forget the trip to Bass Rock that I did last June and this was something what I really want to make!



But this is more like a fictional story although fundamentally, it is a non-fiction. It is always the matter to me. I want to make a non-fiction book but at the same time I don't want it to be a science book.



I still don't know my position yet. Do I want to be a children's book illustrator? or a scientific illustrator? or a wildlife artist? or rather a nature interpreter? a journalist? But a title doesn't mean anything.

出会い

海外に住んでいると、同じ異国に住んでいる日本人というだけで、遠い知り合いの知り合いとコンタクトをとりはじめたりする。昨日もそんな出会いがあった。ここから何かが生まれそうな予感。人の縁は不思議だ。

All though I am under high pressure to make final pieces of artwork for the next Bologna Book Fair, I still want to go out and do some sketches of birds. It is really a good exercise both for my body and for my art work.

あけましておめでとうございます。
สวัสดีปีใหม่ ค่ะ




2012, which was supposed to be the end of the world according to somebody, had ended and we are somehow still alive and fine. So I would like to believe that we overcame the time with many natural disasters, nature destruction, conflicts, bad economy and pointless repetitions of regime changes now, and that we can happily move forward step by step.
I think it is more important to head for the right direction and enjoy each step than to try getting to the goal as fast as possible. It's easy to roll down but difficult to go up. We all know that!
May your 2013 will be a delightful and memorable year!
一歩一歩、しっかり登っていきたい2013年。本年もどうぞよろしくお願いします。

Thinking back 2012 〜大晦日によせて〜

2012 was a fuzzy year for me. I finished my MA and started my career as a freelancer. In someway it meant to become a non-person without any title. I didn't do any big works and I feel like I haven't progressed enough for the result to be shown.
But it was surely a wonderful year. I began to see who I am and where I should be heading for. And I needed this time and will need a little more to figure out where and how to start.



2012年、あんたは何をやっていたんだ、と言われると、答えに窮してしまいそうですが･･････みなさんのおかげで、なんとか日々生きています！　この秋はバードウォッチング旅行専門の(株）ワイバードのホームページデザインをやらせていただきました。
地道に一歩ずつ、やりたい事ができるように、精進していきたいと思います。本年はいろいろとお世話になりました。

Young探鳥会

久しぶりに一時帰国し、何もかもが新鮮に感じたのは束の間。気づけば日本の生活に慣れて、2年間のイギリス暮らしは、心地良い夢か何かだったような気がしていた。
そしてまたケンブリッジに戻ってきたいま、今度は日本滞在が夢だったような気がしている。ナルニア国とロンドンを行き来する子どもたちが味わっているのは、こんな気分だろうか。



15日に井の頭公園で行われたYoung探鳥会に参加した。本当に大勢の参加者にびっくり！　そしてキクイタダキやヒガラ、イカルと今年の冬鳥の多さにも、改めてびっくり！
オシドリが長いことポーズをとってくれたのでスケッチできた。



そして翌週のYoung探鳥会交流会では、2年間イギリスで体験したこと、学んだこと、留学について、絵本づくりについてのお話をわたしが発表させていただいた。見事に風邪を引いて声が出ず、お聞き苦しかったと思いますが、集まってくださったみなさま、ありがとうございました！
I made a presentation about my experience in Britain for young bird watchers in Japan. I talked about public footpath, a walk in fresh air with green wellies, rivers without fences or concrete bank, dark night and big sky, gardens performing as green corridors, tradition of field sketch, living in a hundred years old house...all those things that I love about being here.

Sketching

The Thai trip was very special to me because I could spent several days with Ajaan Kamol Komolphalin and sketch birds, animals, plants and scenery.



The second trip we had during my stay in Thailand was to Mae Wong Natinal Park and we spent two nights at Chong Yen.

Large Indian Civet came out to feed on the leftover rice at night. I had no idea what kind of animal it was when I sketched this.



Every time it came out for a few minutes, I could only observe some part of it. But by watching it several times, I gradually understood its complete picture!
