大晦日

気づけばすでに大晦日。今年は母もわたしも仕事納めどころではなくて、年越し仕事になりそうだ。フリーランスだと、クリスマスプレゼントに仕事をもらい、「年始まででいいですよ」と言われてしまったりするのだ。

イギリスでは、クリスマスを日本のお正月のように家族で集まって過ごす。クリスマスの日はお店がみんな閉まっていて電車やバスも動いていない。みんなが家でお祝いをするので街には人っ子ひとりいなくて、国中が休んでいる気がした。クリスマスの数日前から、お正月空けまでは、みんなが休暇をとっているから、何事も普段の時間配分では動かない。
でもそんなしっかりした休みの期間があるというのは、とても贅沢だと思う。

日本は電車が年越し終日運転をして、郵便局が元旦に年賀状を届けてくれる。コンビニも相変わらず24時間営業。だからうちも仕事を抱えて祖母の家へ。
祖母の家にインターネット回線がないのがちょっとうれしい。

2014 was a wonderful and a big step up year for me, publishing my very first picture book, Weihnachtsspuren im Winterwald, and making illustrations for an anthology and leaflets, exhibiting my works at the International Ornithological Congress, selling some paintings and sketching lots of Japanese wildlife and scenery!  Thank you so much all for being a part of it! 
I am still far away from standing on my own or feeling secured or being satisfied with my works...but I know that it will take more time.  My friend told me that in seven or eight years of being freelance, you will start to see the light and where to go. It seems that I need to keep going like this for another several years!  



We got another massive order from Hobby's World!

Christmas dinner on the beach

I wish you a very happy Christmas!



This year I had a early Christmas dinner on a beach.  Roast chicken cooked in a Dutch oven on open fire was amazing!
相模湾にポツンと浮かぶ大小の点が二つ。何だろうと望遠鏡をのぞいたら、アカエリカイツブリとハジロカイツブリのようだった。これまでアカエリカイツブリは、「これがアカエリです」と教えてもらった上で観察していたのであまりどういう鳥という印象がなかったけれど、こうして遠くの点とにらめっこして自分で考える機会があると特徴が頭に入る。首が太くて、ハジロより全然大きくて、なんとなくカモ体系。

第5回フィールドスケッチ会

Last Sunday we had our fifth sketching event. I remember talking with Godo-san as we started the event that it would be nice to make it five times in a year. So it's December and it was the fifth one! Here is the link to our official blog and you can find photos and participants' works of the day.
神奈川県立四季の森公園で５回目のスケッチ会を開いた。住宅地の中に残る里山らしい公園。アオジ、シメなどのほか、スケッチはできなかったけれど、ミソサザイやアオゲラも見かけた。こういう公園では、バードウォッチングの延長上でスケッチをしていく。まずは、じっとしているか、何かに夢中になっている鳥を探すところから。

まだ枝に残るエノキの実を食べるシメ。（Hawfinch eating dried fruits of Celtis sinensis）



シジュウカラ （Great Tit）
It was a brilliant sunny day...to start with.  I was focusing on the flock of long-tailed tits and great tits.  It was beautiful because they were in a maple tree still remained red and the sun was shining on them.
But when the flock was gone, I realised that I was freezing!
During the lunch time, the sun went into cloud and at one o'clock, it showered for half an hour.  It was very cold to sketch without the lovely sun.  But it didn't matter much since we started the critique at the information centre with biscuits!  

Just Keep Working!

家から一歩も出ないで机に向かう日がつづいているので、お尻に根が生えないように、近所を散歩して、息抜きスケッチ。
Some winter birds greeted me as I walked around the nearby park.



シメ　Hawfinch

　

A female bull-headed shrike.  Looking at the tale of the shrike, it reminded me of Eeyore.  Because the tail looks like just pinned to the bottom but not really a part of its body.




夜の磯観察に連れて行ってもらったときのスケッチから、"カメノコフシエラガイ"なるウミウシ。よくみると、模様がきれい。
懐中電灯片手に、それでもついスケッチブックを開いてしまった。夜中にスケッチしようと思うと、対象物だけでなく自分のノートも照らさないといけないから難しい。



サザナミトサカハギの幼魚だという。弱っていて、なぜか水中でバク転していた・・・。
夏に黒潮に乗って流れてきてしまった熱帯系の幼魚で、秋になり水温が下がると子孫を残すことなく死んでしまう、死滅回遊魚らしい。
毎年、こうして無駄に死んでいく個体がいるけれど、こういう冒険家がいるから、気候が変わったときには新たな区域に分布拡大ができるんだろう。



My mother always says that anything that is half finished, will be done.
I am now about my half way through of my next picture book.  So just need to keep working!
(No more procrastinating and doodling!)

リトルターン報告会

秋はイベントが多くて、土日はどれもこれも重なってしまう。この土曜日もYoung探鳥会、野鳥の会神奈川県支部の会員フォーラム、ヤクザル調査報告会などなど、心を動かされるイベントばかりで迷ったけれどリトルターンプロジェクトの報告会に参加してきた。

今年、森ヶ崎水再生センターの屋上での営巣数は過去３番目に多く、孵化数は２番目という大成功で、これは「いやがらす」などのカラス除けが功を奏した結果だという。ただ７月末に屋上が十数センチ水没するほどの洪水になったせいで、巣立ちヒナ数はのびなかったようだ。年ごとに天候が違い、天敵の数が違うので、何をどうすれば必ず繁殖が成功するというものではなく難しそうだ。報告会では、リトルターンを題材にした演劇まであった！

I showed some of my sketches and paintings at the Little Tern Project's meeting to present this year's result as these were my result from joining their researches!



今年、講習会から4回ほど営巣調査に参加させていただいて、お手伝いがてらにスケッチもさせてもらった。その観察やスケッチ、スケッチから描いた絵などを、報告会の片隅で展示させていただいた。リトルターン・プロジェクトのみなさま、お世話になりました！

鎌倉のカッパドキア

Some more autumn scenery!

まんだら堂やぐら群
鎌倉一帯は、鎌倉石と呼ばれる凝灰質砂岩の層があり横穴を掘りやすいため、あちこちに「やぐら」と呼ばれる横穴式のお墓がある。鎌倉時代の中頃から室町時代の中頃にかけて、奈良、京都から石工など技術を持った人が入ってきて、また鎌倉の人口増加もあって、山の中に供養する場がつくられるようになったようだ。いくつも「やぐら」が横に続き、中に供養塔・石仏が置かれている様は、ちょっとカッパドキアみたい。

この「まんだら堂やぐら群」は約150穴あり、「やぐら群」の中では規模の大きいものだ。鎌倉時代に尾根を掘り割って作られた道、名越切通沿いにある。「まんだら堂」という呼称は残っているが、実際の「まんだら堂」の存在はまだ確認できていないらしい。まだ調査などが進められていて、一般には春と初夏と秋に数日しか公開されていない。



何の実だろうと思って調べたらサネカズラだった。 Kadsura japonica
名にし負はば 逢坂山のさねかづら 人に知られで くるよしもがな

Early spring issue of the YBIRD travel agency's brochure has just come out.  The front cover of the new one is the purple heron, which can be found in southern islands in Japan.   
このシリーズの表紙画は３色のみで描いている。鳥はそれぞれに色が決まっているので、いかに少ない色で表すか、どの色を選べれば重ねた時に別の色を作れるかなど頭を使う。でも制限があると逆に面白いものができる気がするのだ。

後楽園

On the last day of our trip, we spent all our morning in Korakuen garden before we caught the shinkansen back to Tokyo.
Korakuen is one of the three famous gardens in Japan built in late 17th century.



後楽園は朝8時から開園していて、スーツ姿で一人で来ているビジネスマンの姿をけっこう見かけた。岡山のビジネスホテルに入園券付きセットなどがあったので、出張ついでに、午前中のミーティング前に、ちょっと園内が歩けるような配慮がされているのだろうか。

There was a heron on a paddy field in the garden, which caught a massive frog. The frog was much wider than the heron's gape. He could not swallow it. We must had been watching him for more than 40 min but he was struggling and obviously tired. In the end, we had to leave him so I still don't know if he managed to eat the frog or had to let it go. I wonder if it used more energy to eat it than he could get by eating it!

外国人を案内してまわると、普段、目にして口にしているものも何やら新鮮に感じる。こんにゃくの作り方、そうめんとうどんの違い、焼きそばに卵は入っているのかどうか、新幹線は普通の電車の線路を走れるのか、などなど、これまで疑問にすら思わなかったことを聞かれてハッとしたりもする。イギリス人が日本で一番驚いて喜んでいたのは、たぶん、トイレの便座が温かいこと！

犬島と犬の島

We spent good several hours on Inujima, one of the Benesse Art Sites, in Setonaikai inland sea on a brilliant sunny day.



ベネッセアートの島、犬島も訪れた。岡山から電車とバスとフェリーを乗り継いでいく。吉井川、稲わらを積み上げた田んぼ、池など車窓からの風景がとてもよかった。杭にとまるミサゴも発見。



This copper smeltery in Inujima was built in 1909 but only worked for about ten years until the price of the copper suddenly dropped. Then in 2008, a modern artist Yukinori Yanagi and an architect Hiroshi Sambuichi made the ruin into a museum.
犬島美術館の鏡を使って外の明かりを取り込み、その光だけで、真っ暗な製錬所内のジグザグの道を歩かせるインスタレーションはとても新鮮だった。
池澤夏樹のアトミックボックスに出てくる「一方の壁だけが残っている発電所」も「犬の島」もちゃんとあった。

Walking on the island and seeing other modern art installations suddenly appear in the rural village scenery was very amusing and peaceful. There were many loquat trees growing on the island. We saw a Japanese sparrowhawk.



直島に行くフェリーを見送りながら犬島港で。いつか直島、豊島も訪れてみたい。

Kurashiki

We moved further west to Kurashiki. There are many buildings and old storehouses with Namako-kabe, walls with a white grid pattern on black slate tiles.  Some are in horizontal way and some are in diagonal way.



西洋美術、近代美術を展示する日本で最初の美術館が出来た土地だけあって、アートとカルチャーの町。



Looking at the scenery of different shades of grey, I decided to drew this with a grey brush pen, which I got at a Japanese calligraphy shop in Nara.



川沿いのハギがきれいに黄葉していた。
築100年の古民家を利用したゲストハウス「有鄰庵」に泊まり、夜はゲストハウススタッフおすすめの新粋という素敵な居酒屋に入って、そのあと90年以上は営業しているという昔ながらの銭湯にも行った。イギリス人には銭湯のお風呂は熱つ過ぎたらしい。カラスの行水になってしまった！
