チビ、動き出す

今日は守備良くチビが早く寝たのに、わたしもあまりに眠くて仕事をする気にならなかったので、ブログをアップすることに。 
My little one finally started to move about.  It's amazing to see how she becomes able to do many things!  



She loves looking at and touching picture books these days.  I couldn't help but making a rubber stamp image of her. I printed it on a very thin, transparent Japanese paper and inserted some colour paper underneath.
The book she is reading is an actually existing book—"Wild! Mealtime" by my coursemate, Courtney Dicmas! 



チビが寝ている間に彫り、先日ベビーシッター付きプリンティングルーム（=実家）で摺ってきた。

最近チビは、好きなものは好き、嫌いなものは嫌い！　 意思がはっきりしているのは良いことなのかもしれないが、離乳食が大変だ。ご飯は嫌い。スプーンも嫌い。スプーンにのったご飯なんか、絶対に食べない！　苦肉の策でパンにご飯をのせてみたら、パンかじりたさに案外喜んで食べたり。試行錯誤の毎日だ。



7ヶ月になりようやく仰向けからの寝返りができるようになったチビだったが、気付けばうつ伏せで過ごす時間のほうがよほど長くなった。出産祝いにいただいたおもちゃが大活躍。



She is very curious about the world above the table and desk. She wants to touch everything that she is not allowed to do so. She noticed that a string was hanging out from a cabinet and tried so hard to reach it.
After some minutes of struggling, she got it! It was her hut that my mum made for her using the fabric I made with my design. She loves to touch it but hates to wear it!



チビがほふく前進でやってくる！



These days, I find it very difficult to draw her. Because she is so interested in my sketchbook that the minute she finds me drawing, she comes to me...and grabs my sketchbook and chews on it.



何やらご機嫌にしていると思ったら、マットレスのカバーの穴をめざとく見つけ、そこに指を突っ込んでグリグリしていた。熱中できるものがあれば一人でも遊べる。



巻き尺も大好き。 



寝ている時間は貴重な仕事時間なので、寝ている姿はなかなか描けないのだが、この間あまりに可愛くて、ついスケッチしてしまった。

久しぶりの海鳥

On the 29th April, I joined the seabird research from a fishing boat at Sagami Bay.  We really had a great day watching many birds and a large pod of Risso's dolphins.   
三鳥連の相模湾船上調査に参加させていただいた。去年の春は妊娠していて、さすがに船に乗る気にはならなかったので、久しぶりの海だった。



Japanese Murrelet is the main target of the research.  Before we got on board, we were informed that the number of the murrelet seems very low.  They didn't see many during the research in early April and there were not many observed from the Jogashima island this season. 
But we actually saw loads of them! In fact the number we recorded was a lot more than the highest number in the past, which was the March 2015. 
The murrelets were found along the ocean front and we counted at least 90 of them.  The total record we saw was 140 but that includes the possibility of counting the same birds twice.  



潮目に沿ってカンムリウミスズメが2羽、４羽、6羽と次々と見つかり、なんと過去最大数を記録した。



飛んでいるところを描くのは難しい！　頭を後ろから見ると、白の部分がV字に見える。



双眼鏡とスケッチブックを片手で押さえながら描くのは難しい。描きやすい右上のコーナーばかりを使ってしまうので、スケッチブックをくるくる回して、いろんな向きから描いてしまう。だから船上調査でのスケッチは、絵の方向がめちゃくちゃになる。



Black-footed Albatross.  
ウミスズメ類に目を凝らし続け、大きい鳥はオオミズナギドリと思っていたところに、クロアシアホウドリが浮かんでいるのを見ると、シギチやカモを見ていていきなりハクチョウが現れたようなサイズ感。やっぱりアホウドリ類はデカイ。

浮いている個体をじっくりみたのは初めてだった。
首が太い。そして目の位置が独特で、頭から首にかけてを捉えるのに苦労した。



I tried to capture their wings when they were flapping.  Being enormous, they need quite a long distance to run to get themselves in the air.   



A Short-tailed Shearwater.  



Red Phalarope in summer plumage.
ハイイロヒレアシシギのきれいな雌。同時に見たのは1羽だったのだけれど、同じページに何度も描いてしまうので、スケッチブック上では2羽になる不思議。



Ancient Murrelets.  
あまり上手く描けなかったけれど、ウミスズメもけっこう見られた。カンムリに比べて頭のあたりが丸くっこく見える。



ハナゴンドウ
相模湾で鯨類を見たのも初めてだった気がする。
At one point, we were surrounded by a large pod of Risso's dolphins!  Some had very white or even pinkish dorsal fin.  



シロエリオオハム、夏羽のきれいな個体が近くを飛んだ。
あの独特の飛翔形、目には焼きつけたつもりなのに、紙に落とそうと思うとうまくいかない。

海上でツバメチドリの死体も拾った。くちばしのオレンジ色が鮮やかだった。独特の足の爪なども見せてもらった。翼や骨は標本になるそうだ。

久しぶりの船でちょっと酔い気味で、島影や船など環境をスケッチし損ねてしまったけれど、スケッチブックを見返したらずいぶんなページ数を使っていた。すぐ隣にありながら、ぜんぜん知らない海の世界はおもしろい。

第20回フィールドスケッチ会

土曜日にみさと公園周辺で、カワウのコロニーのスケッチをメインにしたフィールドスケッチ会を行った。
どうやら記念すべき20回目の会だったらしい。そんなことは全く念頭になかったけれど、参加者も多くて、このところで一番楽しい会になった。

We had a field sketching day on the 13rd April at Misato Park in Saitama. 
Nine people joined the event and most of us drew the colony of Great Cormorants.  



Since everyone drew the same thing from the same place, it was interesting to see what others have in their sketchbook.  
I started drawing the nest with grown-up chicks, everyone's favorite, and expanded the drawing to make a whole colony.  Pen and wash.     



We sat under cherry blossom!  It was such a pleasant weather and place to sketch.  
雨や風の強い日が多い週だったのに、運良くこの日は暖かくて風もなく、まさに春の一日という陽気だった。桜の木の下に座り、花びらが舞う中で描くという、のんびりした幸せな時間になった。今年の桜は丸２週間以上咲いていただろうか。



くちばしのオレンジ色が鮮やかな繁殖羽のアオサギ。この巣に長いこと立っていたが、ヒナが顔を出す様子も、ペアが近くに来る様子もなかった。これからなのだろうか。



川には、カイツブリ、カンムリカイツブリやヒドリガモが泳いでいて、よく見ることができた。でもコロニーを描くのに時間がかかって、なかなかこれらをしっかり描く時間はとれなかった。

お昼頃に一度作品を見せ合う時間を取って、みんなの作品に刺激を受けてから午後にまたスケッチをはじめるのも良いかもしれないとか、途中でそれぞれが持ってきた画材を交換し合い、他人の画材で描くというのはどうだろうなど思いついた。この会が普段やらないことを試す機会になるのも良いかもしれない。

Bologna Sketches

This Bologna trip was only possible because my husband, my mum, my grandma and my aunt all took turn looking after my baby while I was away for a week. And it was possible because they did it not only during this period but have been doing it since she was born. Baby knew them very well and was very used to spend time with them. So I could leave her without worrying too much.
「チャンスの神様は後ろハゲなんだよ。前髪が見えるうちにつかんでおかなくちゃ」と言ってくれた夫、「一週間くらい、チビは大丈夫だよ。居残り組で何とかするよ」と請け合ってくれた母、「3日間手伝いに行けるよ」と平日の日中の助っ人を申し出てくれた祖母のおかげで、久しぶりに一週間も家をあけて旅に出ることができた。



My friend and I drew this Palazzo d'Accursio before entering it to see our classmate, Zack Rock's original works for "Homer Henry Hudson's Curio Museum" in the exhibition "Les Maitres De L'Imaginaire."  



I had a nice panino for sunday lunch with my friends and sketched the scene in the restaurant. 
I only did these two sketches during this trip because even in the evening after the fair, I was busy socialising!  It was the first time in months that I joined any parties.     

たいがいの時間を良い子にしていてくれたらしい娘にも大感謝だ。どうせ覚えてないでしょ？とも思うが、大きくなってから誰かに聞いて、「置いていったのー？ひどい」と恨まれるのだろうか……。
帰ってきた日、母が一刻も早く会いたいだろうとチビを連れて駅まで迎えに来てくれた。でもチビはわたしの顔を見ても「知っているような気はするんだけど、この人誰だっけ」と怪訝そう。帰るまでの間に、母の胸に頭をつけて、すやすや寝てしまった。
家で抱っこしてあげたら、ようやく誰だかわかったようで、大きな笑みを見せてくれた。まだ視覚情報の記憶力はそんなにないのかもしれない。



There are only a few things sold at the bookfair but my friends found this cute rabbit and bought it for my baby!  We named it sasaa, which means rabbit in Marathi, my friends' mother tongue. 
また寝室と昼を過ごす部屋の行き来を一緒に移動する"一族郎党"が増えちゃったー、と夫。
She's just started to move about and I often find her fallen off from the mattress these days.  

Digital Cafe Talk

During the Bologna Children's Bookfair, I had a chance to talk about my work at Digital Cafe in a talk session organised by my professor, Martin Salisbury, with two other MA graduates, Sophie Burrows and Farren Phillips.



Hidden Digital: Illustrators and the Secret Life of the Computer. 
Well, my name was on the bookfair program! 
ケンブリッジ・スクール・オブ・アートの教授からの依頼で、ブックフェア内で開催されるトークイベントで発表する機会を得た。デジタルカフェという、絵本の電子書籍化や絵本づくりにおけるデジタル・メディアの使い方についての議論が行われる会場でのセッションで、同じコースの卒業生２人とともに、一人10分ずつ自分の技法について話した。



As you know, my works are far from digital so you must wonder what I had to say at Digital Cafe.  But I often plan my prints and illustration works with Photoshop before I actually start with traditional media.  Because especially with printmaking, it is hard to go back the process once I start carving the block.  
In reduction linocut method, which I used in making the "Magnificent Birds" book, the first few lines I cave, which turn to be paper white, are often the very highlight of the image.  So it was always good to see how much white I need in the final image, when starting the carving process.

版を彫り始める前に、まずはphotoshopを使い、版画の制作行程をなぞるようにラフ画を作っている。各色をどのくらい彫れば良いのか事前に把握できると失敗がすくないし、編集者にしっかりした完成イメージを見せられるので、出来上がってからやり直しをさせられることが少なくなる。絵本の場合は、画家が好きに描けばそれでよい一枚絵と違って、やはり編集を得て世に出るものだし、締め切りの問題もあるので、ある程度は計画してから描いたほうがうまく行く気がしている。

The other two presenters were also not drawing entirely in digital but using photoshop to colour the image.  There was an interesting talk about how they pick the colour they want from millions of possible choices when you work in digital. 
Martin concluded the session saying that digital media can be a safety net for frightened illustrators!

I asked my friends if they had one or two photos of me talking. And they'd sent me loads of them!  Thank you for coming to listen and taking pictures!  

英語どころか、日本語ですら人前で話す機会が少なくなっていて、日頃は「お口開けて、あーん」「ごろん、できたー！　すごいねえ」などの言葉しか発していなかったので、頼まれたときはどうしようかと思ったが、とりあえず無事に終わってほっとした。
翌日、フェアを歩いていたら、そのトークを聞いたというイラストレーターが何人か声をかけてきてくれてうれしかった。

Bologna Children's Book Fair

ボローニャ・チルドレンズ・ブックフェアは、基本的には各国の出版社同士が翻訳出版のための版権売買をする場だ。そこにイラストレーターが便乗して、機会があれば編集者に会い、ポートフォリオやダミーを見てもらったりと仕事のチャンスを狙っている。
編集者はみんな忙しいので、話せたとしてもほんの一瞬。でも、ネットなどには公開されていない、編集者の直接の連絡先を教えてもらえたりと、その後のきっかけづくりには十分だ。もちろん、ここでたくさん種を蒔いたとして、全く発芽しないかもしれないし、数年後の忘れた頃だったりするかもしれない。でもきっとどこかには繋がっている。

数多くある出版社の中から、自分の作品のテイストに合った会社を見つけ出せるのも、各社がディスプレイしている絵本を自由に眺められるフェアならでは。
そして何と言っても、こんなにたくさんの絵本を読める機会なんて他にない。ただ会場を回るだけでもとても勉強になる。



Since my works for the book published by Fukuinkan Shoten entered the Illustrators Exhibition 2019, they made a special panel about me to put up on their stand along side with three of my books.  



"Magnificent Birds" was on display at Walker Books.  
これまで仕事をしたスイスのAtlantis社やイギリスのWalker Booksの編集者やアートディレクターなどに挨拶してきた。編集者が変わったり、メールでしかやり取りしていなかったりで実際に顔を合わせるのは初めての人も多かった。
国際的に活躍しているイラストレーターが、ボローニャは１年来なくても問題ないけれど、数年間来ないと知っている編集者がみんないなくなってしまう、と話していた。わたしも今年、最後に行った2015年に名刺をもらった人に連絡してみようとしたところ、ことごとく別の会社に移動してしまっていることが判明した。せっかくフェアで売り込みをして、作品に興味を持ってもらっても、ぼうっとしているとまた忘れ去られてしまうのだから難しい。また一から売り込みをはじめるのは大変だから、この業界でがんばろうと思ったら、やっぱりコンスタントに活動し続けるのが大切なのだと実感してしまった。

"Magnificent Birds" were also sold at the book shop in the fair and my friend saw someone looking at it! 



Not just my books but I spotted books by our classmates from the MA course at Cambridge School of Art: Rosemary Shojaie's "The Snow Fox," Harriet Muncaster's Isadora Moon series, Yiting Lee's "美好動物園(An Ideal Zoo)," Zack Rock's "Good Story" and Ruchi Mhasane's "Dance of the Wild," which was selected for this year's International Youth Library.  We really are in the industry now. 
And there were a lot more by the MA graduates from different year. 
Of course, there was a Cambridge School of Art stand, displaying dummy books by current students.  I had a nice chat with my professor and some of the students.  
All these really brought me back to my student days, filled with energy and inspiration!  
ボローニャ・ブックフェアはなんだかんだ４回目。ようやく情報量の多さや目新しいものに圧倒されるだけでなく、自分が見たいものを探して、必要な刺激を得て楽しめるようになった気がした。

Bologna Illustrators Exhibition

I went to the Bologna Children's Book Fair 2019
to see my works exhibited in the Illustrators Exhibition!
とんぼ帰りのイタリア旅行で、ボローニャ・チルドレンズ・ブック・フェアに参加してきた。ボローニャ国際絵本原画展に入選することなんて、次にあるかわからないから。

久しぶりに世界の絵本や世界のイラストレーターに囲まれて、
この雰囲気、この多様さを忘れてはいけないんだったと思い出した。



そしてその世界に、今年は自分の作品も飾られていることがとても誇らしかった。

入選作は福音館書店から「ちいさなかがくのとも」シリーズの2017年10月号として出版された『きょうは たびびより』のイラスト5枚だ。
My selected work is illustrations for the book "A Perfect Day for Traveling" published by Fukuinkan Shoten Publisher, Tokyo in 2017.   



I saw someone discussing over my works!  They must have been wondering about the rubber stamp method, finding the same-shaped birds here and there in the illustration. 



こんな壁にも、わたしのヒヨドリは、ちゃんと印刷されていた。
Variety of artworks were selected for this year's exhibition.  Some are types of illustrations that you won't see in Japanese picture books.  And that is the charm of this exhibition and the book fair itself, being out of a country.   
You would forget that there are so many different kind yet beautiful and interesting works in the world if you stay in a country.  Because the books you see in bookshops are always those selected for that particular market.  But inspirations often come from something outside ordinary, beyond your comfort zone.

We had opportunities to chat with some fellow selected illustrators.  Learning other artists' technique is always very interesting!

ボローニャ国際絵本原画展は、初夏から日本の美術館を巡回する。

The exhibition will come to Japan in June and exhibited in four museums in different cities and then head to South Korea and China! 

英会話探鳥会

３月24日、日本野鳥の会東京支部が初の試みとして葛西臨海公園で行った英会話探鳥会のお手伝いをしてきた。東京に住んでいる外国人や観光に来ている人が参加できるようにという企画だ。
わたしがタイやアメリカ、イギリスで現地の探鳥会に参加したときは、現地のバードウォッチャーが親切にいろいろ教えてくれて、とても楽しかった記憶がある。そのおかげで英語は上達したし、今も親しくしている友人がたくさんいるし、その国での鳥見スタイルもわかったし、学ぶことが多かった。
外国人にとって日本で普通に行われている探鳥会に参加するのはハードルが高いから、こういう企画は良いと思う。

今回は初回だったのもあり、外国人は数名だった。そしてなんと英語で探鳥をしたいという日本人がいっぱいいて、参加者は32名の大所帯だった。英語を学びたい人ってこんなにいるんだなあ。
On Sunday, I joined "Bird Walk at Kasai Rinkai Park for English speaker" as a volunteer. It was an event organised by Tokyo local group of Wild Bird Society of Japan and the idea was to conduct it in English so that foreigners living in or visiting Tokyo can join it. There were not many foreigners but a lot of Japanese, who wanted to speak English, participated in the event.  But it was the first ever trial for them.  We will see how the event grows in the future!      



We had a good view of Eastern Buzzard perching on a bamboo tree.  
鳥見英語は鳥の英名から！というのはわたしも何度かBIRDER誌に書いたけれど、今回はまさにそんな雰囲気で、まずは英名を言ってみようという感じだった。
鳥の英名の発音を覚えるだけでも、英単語の発音はけっこう学べる気がする。
ローマ字のせいで、「a=ア」「i＝イ」「u=ウ」「e=エ」「o=オ」と思い込みがちだけれど、実際のところ、aはlとの組み合わせや二重母音で「オー」になることが多いし、uやoは「ア」と読むことのほうがむしろ多い。Buzzardだって、「ブザード」ではなくて「バザード」に近い発音だ。
そんな話をBIRDER誌での連載「English for Birding」の2017年8〜10月号にまとめているのでお手元にある方はめくってみてほしい。



There were still several Black-necked Grebes at sea.  They should leave the area and migrate soon.  It was interesting to see them all in different stage in changing plumage from winter to summer.  Some of them were in beautiful summer colour!  

The check list, which was handed at the beginning of the event, didn't have the name, "Black-necked Grebe".  So I was puzzled and then realised that its American name is "Eared Grebe"!    I suddenly remember the conversation I had with my friend when we saw a couple of Slavonian or Horned Grebes in Scottish highlands. Their American name is confusing for us because Horned Grebe in Japanese is Mimi-kaitsuburi, which literary means "eared grebe".  



Black-headed Gulls feeding at a mudflat.  They were stepping on the mud in order to get some preys in it.   We spotted one Black-headed Gull with its head actually black, turning in its summer plumage. 
We also saw some early migrants like Barn Swallows and Little Ringed Plovers, the messengers of the spring!  



カワウとキブシ。いつかちゃんとした絵、それも和風に縦長の作品にしたい。
