夏祭り

I had finally submitted the artworks for my third picture book of the year and got some free time!  It was such a relief to finish it as I had been working under a very tight schedule since last autumn.  I will write about my projects sometime later, but for now, I need a break!  
大きな仕事が一段落したので、近くの公園のお祭りにスケッチブックを持って出かけた。仕事が終わっても、結局絵を描いているのだが、ふらりと出かけて、好きなものだけを描けるのはうれしい。しばらく彫らなくても摺らなくてもいいのもうれしい。



We had the summer festival in the neighbourhood this evening.  All the kids from the area gathered at a local park.  I didn't know that there are that many children in this area!    



スーパーボールすくい。
住宅街の真ん中の小さなお祭りなので、地元の人々が出す健全な焼きそばやかき氷、スーパーボールすくいのお店などしかない。

先日、横須賀美術館に展示を見に行ったら、ちょうど走水神社のお祭りをやっていたので、ついでにのぞいてきた。海のお祭りを見るのははじめてだった。
神社からはじまり、御神輿が周辺の地区をまわって神社に戻るという祭りのようで、地区から地区へと渡す間は船に御神輿をのせて海を通る。



Last sunday, I happened to see a part of the summer festival of the Hashirimizu shrine in Yokosuka.  They carry the Mikoshi (a portable shrine) around the local villages and the sea.    



In this sketch, I tried to capture the scene when local men rush to the boat, which carried the Mikoshi across the sea,  to welcome the god and carry it to their village.   

観音崎公園の池の上には、コシアカツバメが数羽、飛び交っていた。

ジャコウアゲハ

あまりに仕事が忙しく家に缶詰になっていたところにジャコウアゲハの蛹をもらった！  蛹を机の前に置いて作業をしていると、どうも受験勉強を思い出してしまう。
何とも不思議な突起のついた黄色い蛹だった。



Chinese windmil（Byasa alcinous)'s chrysalis. 
On the night of the 9th July, its colour turned really dark so I expected it to emerge next morning and set the alarm at 6 o'clock.  But it woke up earlier than me...  
It was already a butterfly when I jumped out of futon.  Why didn't I think of getting up a bit earlier?    



エネルギー不足だと、大事な瞬間を見過ごす。朝起きたら、すでに蝶になっていた。
羽根が白っぽいので雌のようだ。



ジャコウアゲハの名前は、麝香のような香りがすることに由来するというが、それは雄の成虫のみのようで、この個体は雌だからかとくに匂いはしなかった。



窓を開けたら、ふわふわと青空に飛んでいった。

先日、自然観察をしていて、ジャコウアゲハが卵を産むような仕草をしているのを見かけた。蝶が飛び去った後に、そっとそのあたりのウマノスズクサをめくってみたのだが、どこにも卵はついていなかった。なんだったのだろう。

里山の鳥たち

日本野鳥の会神奈川支部からのお仕事で、神奈川の里山で見られる20種の鳥を入れた絵を描いた。久しぶりのアクリル画だった。
神奈川支部が大口の寄付を受けたことにより立ち上げた記念事業の一環でつくったもので、この絵のポスターは県内の十数カ所の小・中・高等学校に寄贈され、子どもたちに毎日、見てもらえるようになる。



I was commissioned to paint this Satoyama environment with twenty bird species by Kanagawa local group of the Wildlife Bird Society of Japan. The printed posters of this painting will be given to a dozen of schools and displayed at corridors or staircase landings, where children can have a look at it every day.



最初の色校風景。紙によって発色が異なるので、まずは刷る紙を決めた。印刷会社の方とお話できたのは初めてだったので、いろいろ勉強になった。

ワイバード通信の15周年記念号

新しいワイバード通信ができあがった。15周年記念号ということで、表紙の絵はもちろんキクイタダキ！
Latest brochure of YBIRD travel agency came out with my cover illustration of a Goldcrest which is the icon bird of the company.



絵本の締め切り間際で切羽つまっているときにも、定期の仕事は容赦なくやってくる。ただ、プロジェクトがないときもかならずいただけるありがたい仕事でもある。両立はむずかしい。

春のスケッチ

It took me ages to scan and update my spring sketches but better to be late than never.  



I found that this tree is called Japanese snowbell.  What a beautiful name!
デザインの仕事でエゴノキを描くことになり、ちょうど花の季節でもあったので、探しに行った。実際は実を描いたのだけれど、やっぱり本物を見て、柄や葉のつき方や形が見るて描けるのはいい。



Hardy Kiwi.
エゴノキを探していて、別の白い花を見つけた。サルナシだった。秋のキウイのような実は知っていたけれど、花をよく見たのは初めてかもしれない。高木に絡みついていたので、望遠鏡に入れてスケッチした。

Distant view of herons and cormorants at a pond. I should have put more effort on this sketch since it was such a nice scenery but these days I seem to have less energy for anything even for sketching...



ひさしぶりに子どもをスケッチ。暇になったら、もうちょっと積極的に子どもを描く練習をしたいのだが！　どうも"暇になったらやりたいこと"リストばかりが長くなっていく。
