Japan Bird Festival 2016

今年もジャパン・バード・フェスティバルに出店します！
It is the Japan Bird Festival season again. I will be selling some of my products and art works there.



This year, I made two new versions of the book covers, During Redstart and the Red-flanked Bluetail.  




今年は『鳥 Arts & Illustrations』というブース名で、5日は一日一種さんと、6日は富士鷹なすびさんと共同でブースを出します。水の館側の会場のステージの西側、神戸さんのGo!Do!バードステンシルブースの隣です。

場所：千葉県我孫子市手賀沼湖畔。



またアビスタ２Ｆの第2学習室前、ギャラリーエトセトラ内のリトルターン・プロジェクトのコーナーでは、多種多用なコアジサシの缶バッチを販売しており、わたしのイラストバージョンも2種類見つかります。（100円以上の寄付で好きな缶バッチがひとつもらえます）。

開園30周年記念トークショー

アップするのが遅くなってしまったが、この秋の一番大きなイベントが終わってちょっとホッとしている。仕事は山積みだけれど、11月のジャパン・バード・フェスティバルまでは、ひたすら家に籠って制作すればよいわけだ。ちょっとぐらい鼻がぐずぐずでもいいし、何を着ていこうなんて悩む必要もない！



10日に行われた横浜自然観察の森の開園30周年記念トークショーは、ジャックの塔の愛称で親しまれる、レンガ作りの横浜市開港記念館で行われた。こんなところで、まさか自分が舞台に立つことになるとは。
俳優で野鳥の会の会長の柳生博氏、蛇や昆虫などの生き物のはっとする瞬間を捉える写真家の佐藤岳彦氏、年間300日も観察の森に通っているという友の会の大浦晴壽氏というすばらしいメンバーともご一緒できて、自然の見つめ方など学ぶことも多かった。
10th of October was a big day for me. I gave a talk about how I grew up to be a birdwatcher and bird illustrator with the support of Yokohama Nature Sanctuary and the ranger and volunteers there. The venue was at the Yokohama Port Opening Memorial Hall, an old Western building.

　　

I became quite nervous looking down more than 300 people from this gorgeous stage!



わたしが鳥の世界に浸り、鳥の絵を描きはじめたのは、毎月1度、観察の森で行われている探鳥会『鳥のくらし発見隊』のおかげ。そんな話を今回させていただいた。

Family Trips

After the job, the company kindly allowed me to extend my stay in Thailand. So I had two short family trips.  



We visited Khao Sam Roi Yot.  My mother, without any knowledge about how to get there, asked if we could go to Phraya Nakhon Cave.  So we took off our shoes, waded in a-feet-high sea to get on a boat to get to a secret beach, from where we started to climb 430 metres.  
After the continuous climb for sometime, the path went down and soon I was facing a huge cliff.  I was in a cave but the sun was shining through the gap above.  It was a beautiful, magical place.

And it started to drizzle.  I could see the rain drops shining against the dark wall of the cave.  There was vegetation growing in the cave only where there was a big gap above, where rain and sunshine came through. 
I wish I could capture the moment somehow in my sketchbook.  But as with any family trips, I was rushed to move on. 
The rain got heavier and we got completely drenched on the way back.  It was nice though that I did not feel cold in wet clothes.



The back of the hotel where we stayed was an open space with shrubs.  Finding a Green Bee-eater perching on a fence in the evening, I decided to get up early next morning.



And this is what I saw, Hoopoes!   In fact, there were four of them.



ホテルの裏の何でもない空き地に生える枯れ木に、一時、ヤツガシラとミドリハチクイとアカモズが一緒に止まった。



コシジロヒヨドリ（Sooty-headed Bulbul）



水上マーケットにも立ち寄った。タイに来たら、一度は飲みたくなる、チャオ・クウェイという黒いゼリー入りの飲み物をゲット。仙草というシソ科の植物の葉や茎を作って作ったものだ。



中学の頃訪れたときの記憶では、もっと小さな水路にもお店があって、船がごった返しているようだったのに、今回行ってみたら、あちこちシャッター街だった。

高校の授業で作った、靴箱の中のフローティングマーケット。まだ物置の一番上にのっていたので、ついひっぱり出してみた。あれ以来、ついぞ3次元には手を出していない気がする。



オオスズメフクロウ（Asian Barrd Owlet）
I knew it was an owl the minute I saw the perching silhouette during the morning birding at a nature resort.



アオショウビン（White-throated Kingfisher）
I thought we had enough of moving from one place to another, so I suggested we stayed at a resort for whole morning. 
At about 9:00 my mother spotted three hawks in the sky.  They were Oriental Honey-Buzzards.  A few minutes after, there was another hawk and more and more.  We counted 21 before 11:30. The place must have been on a migration route!  

A few days later, I was reading "The Laws Guide to Nature Drawing and Journaling," the book I borrowed from my artist friend and I encountered this quote from Thich Nhat Hanh.
“We will be more successful in all our endeavors if we can let go of the habit of running all the time, and take little pauses to relax and re-center ourselves. And we’ll also have a lot more joy in living.”
The 21 Honey Buzzards were the joy of the day for me.  

Khao Yai

I still have the small clipping from the Bangkok post 15 years ago, stuck on the third page of my "guide book to the Birds of Thailand."  It is the advertisement of the birding tour by Nature Trails and has an illustration of the Great Hornbill.  "Tours to Khao Yai National Park,  Nakhon Ratchasima, are planned for Dec 22-23."  
My mother spotted the article and the tour became my best ever Christmas present.  It was my first experience of birding with a real expert.  



I was at Khao Yai again as a part of birding tour, and this time I was the tour leader.  And we saw the Asian Fairy Bluebird, the bird I clearly remember watching during my first trip there.

声は聞こえ、時々枝の間から見えるのに、なかなか全身を見せてくれなかったコガネゲラ。姿を追って、林道を行き来していると、バサバサバサという大きな羽音が近づいて来た。サイチョウだ！　シワコブサイチョウが上を通過するのが、木々の隙間から見えた。こぶが黄色いのが雄、青いのが雌。



This one seems to be a kind of pit viper but I could not figure out which one.



Murmuration of the Wrinkle-lipped free-tailed bats.  
夕方、コウモリの洞窟がある山を前にしたキャッサバ畑で日暮れを待った。暗くなるにつれて、辺りにコウモリ臭が漂う。洞窟の中で、動き始めたのだろうか。
地元の人は、税を払って洞窟内のコウモリの糞を採取し、畑の肥料にしているという。だから許可なしには、洞窟まで登ることはできないのだそうだ。こんなに離れた畑に立っていてもこの匂い。中に入ったら強烈に違いない。
18時15分ごろ、声がして、小さなコウモリの群れが飛び出して来た。
後から、後から、たなびく煙にように飛び出してくる。山の後ろからも、2本目の煙が上がった。
When watching creatures at night, some people become chattier and speak louder even though it is silent enough to hear any soft little sound you make.  Is that because they are afraid of the darkness or silence and trying to ignore it?   

ペッブリー

ずっと長い事、バンコクの通りの名前はペッブリーで、県の名前はペチャブリーで、２つは違うのだと思っていた。実際にはどちらもペチャブリーが正式だけれど、みんなが略してペッブリーと呼んでいるらしい。
そのペッブリー県とラッブリー、カオヤイ国立公園などに、添乗員兼通訳の仕事で行ってきた。



ホシバシペリカン（Spot-biled Pelican）
It was rather odd to see a flock of pelicans on trees together with Black-crowned Night Herons and Little Cormorants.  



羽づくろい中。



I was very happy to see this Indian Darter. The snake-shaped long neck figure looked exactly like those of the natural history illustrations like one of John Gould's and American Anhinga by J. J. Audubon.  I opened my copy of "Treasury of Audubon Birds."  It smelled like a foreign country.  



We visited a Barn Owl at a temple in the evening. We admired this white ghost for a while, some watched, some photographed and I drew.  
It flew somewhere and we decided to call an end to the day's birding.    
Just after we went back to the car, it started to pour.  Everyone was glad about this good timing.  We only had to go straight to the restaurant and to the hotel.
But I wondered what the owl was doing that night, in that heavy rain.
It must have been an awful timing for him/her, just after managing to escape from the human's gaze.

フクロウの顔は人間っぽくて、かわいいと思うこともあれば、時にちょっと気味悪い。タイでは悪魔だとされ、見かけると石を投げたりする人もいるそうだ。そのせいで、あまり簡単には見られないという。
今回、フクロウ類を見た2カ所はお寺だった。緑が残っているのも大きいとは思うが、殺生を禁ずる場所が住みやすいというのもあるのだろうか。
