London Wetland Centre

On the second day in England, we visited the London Wetland Centre.  We were greeted by lots of Moorhen's and Coot's babies! 

２日目は歩いてロンドンウェットランドセンターへ。南極探検をしたロバート・スコットの息子、ピーター・スコットが設立したチャリティー団体、Wildfowl ＆ Wetland Trustによって運営されているサンクチュアリだ。

And we had a nice view of a Green Woodpecker until a granma came and let it fly away.

Kabuka was really happy to see these Canada Geese because she is a big fun of a board game called Wingspan and this American bird is in one of the cards.

11年振りに出かけたウェットランドセンターは、ずいぶん変わっていて、Wild Walkという、丸木橋や吊り橋からなる子ども向けの道ができていた。ピーコックタワーというタワーハイドからは、 Purple Loosestrife（エゾミゾハギ）のピンクとCommon Fleabaneの黄色が一面に見えてきれいだった。

The Wetland Centre also has an area where they keep waterfowls from around the world. I was happy to find that they recently opened an are with Australian Pelicans.  I was familiar with this bird only because it was in my Magnificent Birds book.

ウェットランドセンターの一部は世界各地から集められた水鳥が飛べない状態で放し飼いにされている。時間帯によっては餌やり体験などもできる、ちょっと動物園のような場所になっている。 あまり生き物に詳しくない両親とその子どもにとっては、平凡な自然保護区は何をどう見て楽しんだら良いのかわからないこともあるだろう。だからこうして子ども向けのアトラクションがセットになっていると自然豊かな環境に出かけようと思うきっかけになり、1日遊ぶ中で30分だけ野鳥を観察する、というふうに自然観察沼の入り口に入っていくのだろう。きっとこういう取り組みのおかげで、イギリスの若者の生き物好きは多いのだと思う。

Kabuka also wanted to see crested cranes so she was happy, too!
