Dover

Troubles are part of travel but sometime they bring some nice moments that we haven't expected.

This time, we missed the night coach back to London that we originally planned to get on. So we had to stay extra night in Paris and took the morning coach.
On the way to Paris the coach itself was contained in the Eurostar and the only thing we could see was the inside of the cabin, no sight of whatsoever but just the feeling of the movement.
But the morning coach got on a ferry boat!



Gannet（シロカツオドリ）
I was so exited because we could see Gannets, Puffins, Kittiwakes...and the white cliff of Dover! I had never expected to see the cliff during this trip.
これが本物のイギリス海岸、白亜の崖なのだ。丘の上にドーバー城も見えた。

We ordered the most expensive hot chocolate that we'd ever had before just to sketch the cafe in Paris!

Vista

Bastille
Someday I would like to stay in a room at the corner of a building facing a "place", or square. In Paris, there are many squares and roads are radiating out from there. Almost all the important buildings are by the squares and have great vista down the streets. Walking around the city, I still felt the existence of the city planner, Haussmann.
まっすぐに見渡せる、そして常に見つめられる。絶対王政において「視線」というのは、権力をアピールする上で、非常に重要なことなポイントなのだという。



Musée du Louvre
ルーブル美術館。EU内の学生は無料で入れてしまう！　いまのうちにもう一度、じっくり見学しに出かけなければ。
In the morning and evening, the sky in Paris turned pink, purple with some aqua just like the paintings of impressionist. This must be the same sky that they were looking at.

Le Sacré Coeur de Montmartre
モンマルトルのサクレ・クールが神秘的な夜。
1875年に建設をはじめて完成したのが1914年というと、ちょうど印象派の画家たちがいた頃に作っていたことになる。
平らな盆地のパリ市内で一番高いモンマルトルの丘の上に、この真っ白なサクレ・クール寺院を建てようと思ったのはすごいアイディアだと思う。そして正面は丘の下まで広場と階段になっていてて、見上げる意味でも、見下ろす意味でも視野を遮るものがない。

This was really true! In the metro, on the road, in the stores...people were kissing all the time!

Parc à Paris

On the way to the Triomphe, we stopped by at La Parc de Monceau. This park is considered to be in English style with informal layout and curved walkways. But I could tell this park is in France, not in England because of the fence surrounding the pond.



モンソー公園　
フランス語は一言もわからないけれど、通りすがりのおばさんと"話し"込んでしまった！　スケッチをしていると出会いがある。
"BETTER DROWED THAN DUFFERS IF NOT DUFFERS WONT DROWN"
I think this telegram from the father in the book called "Swallow and Amazon" really represents the English way of thinking. Even in city parks, there are often no fence along the edge of ponds or rivers in England. On the contrary, it seems that French loves fence! All the grass areas, ponds and some trees are fenced...just like those in Japan.

Actually, city parks in Paris look really similar to Japanese normal parks for children except for the huge number of statures and some stone architectures. At the Luxembourg garden, I learned that the tree species they use in the parks are quite similar as well: Ginkgo biloba, Platanus x acerifolia and a kind of Zelkova. And the way they chopped off the tree in a bad way...it is just like Japanese park. We must have learned the management of city park from France.

Bohemian

We had to stay in Montmartre because this is where my friend's favorite opera, "La Bohème" takes place and my favorite Impressionists and Post-Impressionists were living and gathering.
丘という地形が故に、モンマルトルはオスマンのパリ大改造時にまだ田園風景を残しており、たくさんアーティストが移り住んできたようだ。横浜の地元のような(!)急階段や坂道のせいで、建物は多少、がたがたしているし、一軒家も残っていて、街中の整然とした町並みに比べれると少し暖かみを感じる。

ボヘミアンたちのたまり場、そんな場所と時代に憧れる。
でも今のモンマルトルのテアトル広場は、いかにも観光客向けに作られた、同じようなポストカード、絵、似顔絵描きであふれていた。観光地になると、柄だけその場所用に変えただけ、というようなお土産ばかり売っているのにはいつもがっかりする。そして、アーティストのテーマパークか何かに来てしまった気分にさせられるのだ。

I made a short trip to Paris with my friend. It is really nice to know that we can go there anytime by just hopping on a coach!



The view from our hostel in Montmartre.
I was amazed by the planned, uniformed city landscape of Paris. Almost all the building has the same height around seven stories, which is much taller than London, and long windows with decorative fences and cute orange chimneys. I learned that the number of chimneys means the number of fireplaces in the building.
Paris is beautiful when you see it from a window upstairs.

Mistle Thrush

Everyday seems to be another nice day. I've kept feeling that I am spending one of the happiest moments in my life.
Recently, I had several opportunities to go out for birdwatching thanks to my birder friends! Now I need more time in my room to make some paintings or illustrations from the sketches.

風景式の公園とインコ

ボクシングデーに叔父の知人一家に連れて行ってもらったリッチモンドパークをもう一度訪ねてきた。一日かけても、全部は歩ききれないほど広大な公園だ。



Red Deer in Richmond Park（アカシカ）
アカシカとダマジカがかなり多く生息する"せい"か"おかげ"か、柵で保護された場所以外は、あまり下層植生がない。シカは毎年、一定頭数に保つために間引きしているらしい。もともと王室の狩猟場だった場所なので、いかにもイギリス風景式だ。
ともすれば迷いそうなほど延々と草地や林が続き、池や沼地には柵がなく、枯れ枝を木にたてかけた隠れ家？まで作ってある。こんな自然な遊び場が身近にあるロンドンっ子がうらやましい。



Rose-ringed Parakeet（ワカケホンセイインコ）
This introduced Parakeet seems to be the commonest species in the Richmond Park!
インドからの外来種だが、2007年時点のBBCニュースによれば、ロンドンだけで約30,000羽はいると考えられているようだ。都市の大きな公園にワカケホンセイインコ。新宿御苑はインコの生息地であることまでイギリスの公園に倣ってしまったのかも。

Sequence

1学期の二つ目のモジュールは連続したイメージを作るというものだった。一点で独立した絵や、小説の挿絵と違って、絵本や漫画は、前後の絵が互いに何らかの繋がりを持っていなければならない。それは時間の連続性であったり、動作によるつながりであったり、主人公や物など同じ対象によるつながりであったりする。









一枚の絵はある瞬間しか語らない。だから次の絵を見たときに、その間にある時間が読めなければいけない。
ちゃんとわたしのSequenceも読めるだろうか。

三が日にあくせくと、昨年の成果を仕上げてまとめるというのは、なんとなく間が悪い。でもそれがこの大学のカリキュラムだから仕方ない。あと一日！

2011 is a year of rabbit, my year! May your days be happy and full of progress.
クイナ通り国際年だった2010年を終えて、ケンブリッジで迎えるお正月。人生で一番自由に冒険できる一年になりそうな気がしている。
年越しカップラーメンにしようかとも思ったけれど、そばを買ってみた。こちらはまだ大晦日。
