Twitching divers

I went twitching this weekend since I heard that divers are staying in a fishing port not far from my place.  Diver, a special bird for me because of "Great Northern" by Arthur Ransome.



「見ているうちに、鳥は姿を消した。そして、もう一度見えた時には、もっと近くなっていた。それで、この鳥がアビの仲間であることがわかった。鳥は、水中深く身を沈めて泳いでいた。カイツブリにとてもよく似ている」（「シロクマ号となぞの鳥」より）
この話のせいで、アビとオオハムとハシグロアビは、昔からどうしても見たい鳥だった。

Black-throated Divers.



It is a very elegant bird.  When it dives, you never know where it will reappear.  It could be in front of you, it could be in a far away corner.

The water was very clear and we could see the Black-necked Grebes swimming underwater, which was fantastic.

女視展〜それぞれがみつめる生命の息吹〜 2016

今年も、1月24日から一週間、有楽町の交通会館で、生物系の女性作家8人のグループ展を開く。新しいメンバーを5人迎えての展示なので、去年とは違う雰囲気になりそうだ。

わたしは、ここ数年間にたくさん見てきた海鳥の版画作品をまとめて展示予定。交通の便のよいところなので、ぜひふらりと遊びにいらしてください。

I will be joining a group exhibition at Yurakucho, Tokyo with seven other women wildlife artists again.  The show will be held at the ground floor of Kotsukaikan in Yurakucho from the 24th to the 30th January.
My theme this year is seabirds in print.  Some are from the UK, the others from St. Paul Island and still others from Japan.

元旦散歩

What was your first bird of the year?  Mine was the Brown-eared bulbul and I was very happy about it for a secret reason!
今年の元旦は母のたっての希望で竜ヶ崎線に乗りに行った。常磐線の佐貫駅から全長4.5キロ、２駅分だけ走っている路線だ。竜ヶ崎駅の手前に、廃駅となった門倉駅というのがある。うちのご先祖様は門倉姓なので訪れたみたのだ。



We spent rather a strange New Year's day visiting an abandoned Kadokura station on Ryugasaki line.  Peregrine falcon flew passed us while walking in the flat farm land.



せっかくなので、牛久沼で少しだけ初鳥見。

わざわざ絵の具を持って出かけたのに、筆を忘れたので、結局水彩は使えずじまい。祖母の家に置きっぱなしにしていた宝箱の中から古い色鉛筆を掘り出して色付けした。



When the sun set, we had a special view of both Mr. Fuji and the Tokyo Skytree tower through pine trees at my grandmother's place.

あけましておめでとうございます。
สวัสดีปีใหม่

I wish you a very happy New Year!  It's the year of monkey. So here is my snow monkeys in hot spring from Nagano.



11月末にスケッチしてきた地獄谷の猿たち。ほのぼのと、かつ、仲間に毛繕いをしてあげる助け合い精神で、一年を過ごしていきたいとおもいます！

My plan for this year is to develop ideas in my head to projects.  It's not so difficult to come up with ideas but it's hard to pull them into shape, which I can show to someone.  And it needs time.  But when to start should be this year!  

Rosy finches for Christmas

I got on the first train on Christmas day with a special unlimited ride ticket. Train is, of course, running as usual on the 25th of December in Japan.  We headed to mountain area hoping for a white Christmas! 



18切符で下諏訪へ。車窓から鳳凰三山が見え、甲斐駒が正面に見る日野春駅では、運良く特急の通過待ち。



美ヶ原から八ヶ岳をのぞむ。
It's been mild this year and snow was just about to cover the surface of the ground but nonetheless we had a white Christmas!  



Rosy finches, my first encounter in Japan!   Tinge of pink and orange is appealing in snow-white.   



50羽くらいの群れで動いていた。山小屋脇に古米を食べに来て、肉眼でもよく見える近さなのだが、ちょっとした音や動きにもビクビクして、落ち着かない。風切の白黒模様が素敵なので、じっくり描きたかったのだが、なかなか難しかった。




生き物の気配があまりないなかで、ノスリだけは何度も見かけた。少なくとも2羽。このシラビソにとまった1羽は目が白い若鳥だった。



Buzzard was gazing at ground perching or hovering.  Snow on the ground shines the white belly of the bird.  



シカが鳴いた。霧越しに一瞬、見つめ合う。



帰りは日が暮れるまで、諏訪湖でヒドリガモをスケッチ。顔に緑光沢が多く出た、アメリカヒドリとの雑種のような個体も。
せっかくの諏訪湖なので『渡り鳥の足跡』に出てくるグルに会ってみたかったけれど、下調べもせず、移動手段も、時間もなくでは、さすがに見つけられなかった。またいつか。

クリスマスは行徳でカワウ

Christmas. It's time you think of Cormorants. CCC, Christmas Cormorant Count, was held again this year at Gyotoku Bird Observatory.



恒例の行徳野鳥観察舎でのクリスマスのカワウイベント、CCCの講演会とクリスマス会に顔を出した。行徳野鳥観察舎に入って、2階の窓から保護区を眺められるのは最後になるかもしれないからだ。とても残念なことに、1979年に建てられたこの観察舎は、耐震審査の結果が悪く、今月28日から休館が決まっており、再開は未定だ。千葉県議会では廃止案も出ているという。
観察舎は2階、3階に、葦原、水面、カワウのコロニーを見渡せる大きな窓があり、40台以上の望遠鏡が設置されていて、自由に使えるようになっている。なかなかイギリス的な施設だ。イベントの折に遊びにきては、窓辺に座って、ご飯を食べながらスケッチしていた。絵本「アオサギのさかなとり」も、ここでの観察から生まれた。



This precious bird observatory is now facing a big problem.  Because the building is old and does not have necessary earthquake resistance, Chiba prefecture decided to close it and currently there is no  plan for reopening. 
It would be wonderful if we could used this opportunity and build nice observatory with cafe facility like those in Britain instead!  But we need to work a lot for whatever to happen.

耐震問題があるというのは仕方ないが、学校教育、イベント、調査の拠点となっていた施設を廃止してしまうのはあまりにもったいない。この期に、イギリスのNWT Cley MarshesやRSPB Saltholmeのような、ショップやカフェ、子どもの遊び場もついたより素敵な建物にならないものだろうか。イギリスの自然保護区はバードウォッチャーだけでなく、親子が休日を過ごし、カップルがデートに行くところになっている。

何か出来る事はないのかと聞いてみたところ、直接、千葉県に意見を出してくださいとのことだった。県のここのページから送信することができる。また紙ベースであるが署名運動も始まっている。わたしも署名フォームをいただいてきた。

また観察舎の建物は休館しても、保護区での観察会、野鳥病院の運営はつづく。建物が無いからといって忘れずに、ぜひ遊びに来つづけてほしいとも、友の会スタッフの方々がおっしゃっていた。

プレゼント交換会でオニオオハシのレゴが当たった。左は余ったブロックで母が作ったオオハシのための花壇（らしい）。ウミウシかと思った！

I love this time of the year.  It makes me want to do something special...... even though I am somehow always so busy.

Cooking roast chicken at a beach in a dutch oven on open fire is becoming our annual event.  Broccolis and bell peppers made Christmas colour.
オオオナモミだろうか、浜辺にたくさん生えていて、ちょっとしゃがむと靴にも服にもたくさんくっついてしまった。料理が出来上がるころになると、待ってましたとばかりに上空をトビが回る。
Colouring the drawing, I realised the sketchbook still smells the smoke.  

ナンキンハゼとカラ類

13日に行われる予定だったフィールドスケッチ会は雨で中止になってしまった。鳥を見ているだけのときは気にならない小雨も、その中でじっと座り、紙が濡れないよう気を配って絵を描くにはちょっと面倒くさい。だから公のイベントであるフィールドスケッチ会は、降水確率が50％以上ならばやめる事にしてしまっている。雨なら雨の日なりに、湿気った紙で水彩が普段と異なる効果を出すのがおもしろいのだが。そしてフィールドで絵を描き慣れているイギリス人のアーティストたちからは、数ミリの雨で中止にするなんて腰抜けだって言われそうだけれど。

スケッチをしようと意気込んでいた日でもあり、小雨だったので、少しだけ近くの公園を歩いてきた。カラ類が熱心に何かの実を食べている。どうしても何という実だったか思い出せなかったので、地面に落ちていた枝を家に持ち帰ってきた。



大きな枝を見て、さっそく「それ、ナンキンハゼじゃない？」と母。
（なんで母がこんな実の名前を知っているんだ？）
「だって一昨年のお正月に散歩したときに、白い実がたくさんついている木があって、ナンキンハゼだとTingが教えてくれたんじゃない」っと。
当時のわたしはなんでナンキンハゼの実を知っていたんだろう。そしていつの間に忘れてしまったのだろう。
怖くなったので、しっかりスケッチした。これできっと忘れない。

In Search of Birds of Prey

ひょんなことから、利根川沿いに猛禽ウォッチングに連れて行ってもらった。種ごとの性格や仕草を知り尽くしている人と見るととても勉強になる。特定の種、特定の個体を何度も何度も観察していると、ちょっとした動きから感情が見えてくるようになるらしい！




ハヤブサがオオバンを食べているところに遭遇した。飛び去ったあとに見てみたら、オオバンが2個体死んでいた。けっこう獲りやすいのかもしれない。



A peregrine was plucking a coot.  When Slaty-backed Gull came and circled above him, he was annoyed and decided that he had enough for a meal.  He flew away.  



We also saw Merlins!  When I see a Merlin, I can not help but imagining a charming wizard, living backwards in time, from The Once and Future King!   



チュウヒのねぐら入り。
We watched harriers roosting from the car.  Flat landscape and the red round sun reminded me of East Anglia.  I wished there was a hide and we were watching from it, like the one in Woodwalten Fen, perhaps.  It's so much nicer somehow.  Especially after everything finishes, having to walk back to the car through the marsh or along the bank in darkness makes the experience somewhat more special.

Arty Days

We sometimes need to feed ourselves in order to create something. I recently visited two museums, Yabuuchi Masayuki Art Museum in Yamanashi to see the original illustrations for Gamba series, children's stories about adventures of rats and otters, and Yokosuka Museum of Art in Kanagawa to see Ukiyoe prints.

ヒヨ吉さんが、冬期休館に入る前に滑り込みで薮内正幸美術館に連れて行ってくださった。今年の後期の企画は「ガンバの冒険三部作」で、動物画と絵本や児童書の挿絵をやっているわたしにとっては、見なくては、という展示だった。
八ヶ岳の麓でついでに少し鳥見をしたら、ルリビタキの成鳥に出会えた。中野泰敬氏が、「ルリビタキの雄はきれいな青色になるのに3年かかるが、小鳥の寿命は短く、1、2年しか生きられない事も多い」と説明したあとに、「だから、青い個体に出会ったら、よくここまでしっかり生きたね、と労ってあげてください」とおっしゃっていたのを思い出した。
Masayuki Yabuuchi, who did the original book illustration for Gamba series, was a wildlife artist.  So even though the stories are fiction and rats are riding shearwaters and having a party, they really look like real animals, drawn anatomically correct, which reminded me of C. F.Tunnicliffe's Tarka the Otter.  



At Yokosuka Museum of Art, I joined a workshop on Ukiyoe print! A printmaker from the Adachi Institute of Woodcut Prints came to show us how they print the famous Hokusai's Great Wave off Kanagawa.  It has eight layers.  



And we could also try printing the first layer called Omohan, which is the outline. Above image is the one I printed using the block remade by the carver from the institute for educational purpose.  The key is to move the baren horizontally.
Inks for Ukiyoe print are special and more liquid than those for normal block print. They go into the fibers rather than sit on the surface of paper.



Near the museum, we encountered this special nature spectacular, wintering Powdered oakblues gathering on a leaf!
