英会話探鳥会 その２

9月28日に葛西臨海公園で行われた日本野鳥の会東京支部の英会話探鳥会にお手伝い参加してきた。好評だった3月末の探鳥会につづいて２度目の企画だ。
今回は日本語学校の生徒さんが10名ほどきてくれたので、鳥見初心者の外国人が多めだった。初めての人に鳥を見せてあげるというのは、探鳥会慣れした日本人参加者はみな得意なことだったので、英単語3割、日本語7割くらいのチャンポン言語が飛び交い、けっこう会話できていた気がした。野外で鳥見をしながらのほうが、机に座って会話しろというより、よほど交流しやすいのは間違いない。



I joined "Bird Walk at Kasai Rinkai Park for English speaker" on Saturday as a volunteer.  We watched and heard 37 bird species including this Far-Eastern Curlew, the endangered migratory shorebird.



At first, we found it walking and feeding with a Bar-tailed Godwit at the far corner of the mudflat.  But while we were having lunch, it came nearer and nearer and in the end, we watched it very closely!      



I tried to sketch it but since it has such an unusual shape and moves constantly, it was very difficult to put down on paper.  Come to think of it, I haven't sketched Eastern Curlew much either.  I need more practice on this type of bird.  
数歩動いては、ちょっと首を傾げてくちばしを泥に突っ込み、しばらく首をひねったまま格闘したあげくに上手にカニを引っ張りだしていた。この首を捻る動きを捉えたかったのだけれど、ただでさえへんな形の鳥のへんな動き……難しすぎる！



It dug out crabs, putting its long carved beak in the mud, twisting its head. Someone said that this bird looks a bit slim for the Far-eastern Curlew.  It was obviously hungry and there seems to be plenty of food because it was picking crabs almost every few minutes.  



A female Bull-headed Shrike told us it is already autumn but as I drew this, I got bitten by so many mosquitos.   Summer is still here.  

アルバム

I made my baby's second album!
I had a few days waiting for my editor's feedback on my rough for the cover illustration of my next book.   So I decided to make this album.  It was something I really wanted to do before I forget everything.



去年の9月はけっこう暇だったので、エコー画像と最初のひと月の写真やスケッチをまとめて「誕生アルバム」を作った。その後の写真を「０歳アルバム」としてまとめるならこの夏しかないと、先日思い切って作成した。
写真を入稿すれば一冊から印刷してくれるフォトブックを使っているのだが、わたしはこういう風に作りたいというこだわりが強すぎるので、どの会社のものも既存のテンプレートではやりたいことができない。だからInDesignで編集してページごとに一枚の画像にして入稿することにしている。そうすれば文字もスケッチも写真も好きなようにいれられるし、写真の一部を切り取ったものを配置することだってできて楽しい。



When I was little, my mum made a special album of me.  It has a photo of me and a teddy bear every fifty days and she wrote several lines about me at that time.  As my little one grows, I often look back that album to see how the girl will be at the next stage.  So I wanted to make something similar to record her.     

関西旅行

The next day after we climbed the Mt. Ibuki, we strolled around beautiful Samegai-juku, the sixty-first of the sixty-nine stations of the Nakasendo, one of the routes from the Edo period.  This place is famous for the clean water running through the village and this aquatic plant, the Ranunculus nipponicus var. submersus that has white flower like plum in summer.

夫がタマムシの死体を拾った。
Jewel beetle.  It is just like its name, jewel.  I knew that I wouldn't be able to sketch it as beautiful as the real one but I couldn't resist painting it.

醒井水の宿駅の農産物販売所でポポーなる果物を見つけ、初めて聞いた名前だったのでつい買ってみた。見た目はアケビだが、北米原産で、釈迦頭などと同じバンレイシ科の果物。味や食感はマイルドなドリアンという感じだった。
涼しい夜にいかにも南国系の果物だったので最初はちょっと戸惑ったけれど、ドリアンと同じで、食べはじめると、おいしいかも！と思い癖になるような味だった。

宿から彦根城のライトアップが見えた。お城なら動かないし、のんびり描けるやと思って、まずは片付けをしていたら、２１時にポッとライトアップが消えてしまい真っ暗に。やっぱりスケッチは、見て描きたいと思ったその瞬間に描かないとダメなんだなあ。

The last few days of the trip, I stayed in Nishinomiya on my own to welcome visitors at my solo exhibition.  My little one went back with her daddy and spent two days with him and one day with her grandma and great grandma.  She had been a good girl, they all said and I had nothing to worry about!



個展会場だったギャラリーが11時オープンだったので、２日間、朝は甲子園浜まで歩いて出かけた。ハマゴウ、そして外来種のオオフタバムグラが咲いていた。
The gallery opened at eleven o'clock so every morning I had some time on my own.  I walked down to Koshienhama, which is one of very few remained natural coasts between Osaka and Kobe.

2日目は甲子園浜自然環境センターの3階にある望遠鏡を使わせていただいて、鳥をスケッチ。
せっかく秋の渡りの時期なのに、生憎、朝の時間は満潮直後で、シギチはキアシシギ、イソシギしか見られなかったけれど、ミサゴをじっくり観察できた。



センターのスタッフの方にちゃっかり個展の宣伝をしてきたら、翌日に見に来てくださって、とてもうれしかった。

伊吹山

When I took the chance to exhibit my works in a gallery in Ninishomiya, we decided to spend several days in Kansai area as our summer holiday.  So for the very first time, my little one got on the Shinkanse train and spent nights in hotels.
西宮での個展に合わせて、少しだけ家族で関西旅行をした。メインは伊吹山の初秋のお花畑。



琵琶湖、そして竹生島！　カワウの研究で必ず出てくるので、名前だけ知っていた竹生島だが、こんなところにあるこんな島だったのか。
We climbed the Mt. Ibuki. We could drive up to 1260 m but had to climb the last 100 m on foot.  It was a beautiful day and the air was cool but the sunshine was very strong. 



Sketch from the top of the mountain.  Mt. Ibuki is famous for its unique wildflower garden.  It is an old limestone mountain and during winter, the weather is very harsh, affected by the Japan Sea climate.  So it has many endemic plant species.
山頂まで、チビを抱っこ紐に乗せて、がんばって登った。ルリトラノオ、イブキトリカブト、コイブキアザミなど伊吹山の特産種や名前を冠した植物のほか、カワラナデシコ、アキノキリンソウ、シオガマギク、リンドウ、サラシナショウマなども咲いていた。ドライブウェイの終点付近では、アケボノソウ、イブキレイジンソウ、クサボタンなども見つけた。
鳥はハチクマ、ツバメ、イワツバメ、コシアカツバメ、アマツバメ、ホオジロ、シジュウカラ、メジロ、ホシガラス、イワヒバリ！　自然観察ガイドブックによれば、ホシガラスとイワヒバリは、秋になるとより標高の高い山から降りてくるらしい。
Mt. Ibuki is also famous for a Golden Eagle pair.  But I had given up with the idea of seeing them.  The eagle couple has a big territory so one could easily wait for a whole day and not seeing them once.  With our one-year old, we could not possibly spend long time in the mountain.



But look, what we saw at the last stop!



They were sitting there for quite a long time. Actually, we couldn't wait and see them fly because we had to go and check in at our hotel.

西宮での個展が終わりました

西宮のギャラリーアライでの個展「絵本と鳥　東郷なりさの作品展」が無事に終わった。



またも、これまで無縁だった地域、関西で初めての個展だったけれど、なんと芳名帳に名前を書いてくださった方で97名。ギャラリーの方のカウントによれば200名近い方が見に来てくださった！　
実はその中で、以前にお会いしたことが会った方はたったの10名。これは本当に宣伝をしてくださった方々のおかげだ。 とくに日本野鳥の会の大阪支部は、神奈川在住アーティストの兵庫県での個展なのに、ホームページその他で盛大に宣伝してくださり、おかげで大阪のバードウォッチャーがたくさん来てくださった。



My solo exhibition at Gallery Arai in Nishinomiya, Hyogo had just finished.  I had so many visitors!  



後半の連休に在廊したかったので、搬入には行けず、ギャラリーの方に展示をお任せすることになってしまったのだが、とても素敵に飾り付けしてくださった。



大谷記念美術館のボローニャ展を見て、「ヒヨドリの絵が良かったので来ました」と言ってくださる方も多かった。 西宮近辺に住んでいる方は、毎年必ずボローニャ展に行く人が多く、近隣の小学校では授業の一環としてボローニャ展を見るという。だから毎年、西宮は板橋区立美術館の２倍、3倍もの来場者があるのだそうだ！
そういう環境だからこそ、周辺のギャラリーで、これまで西宮に縁もなければ、ギャラリーのオーナーが会ったこともなかった入選作家の個展をやるという「西宮ぎゃらり〜さんぽ」企画が成り立つのだと思った。



My little one and me at the Bologna Exhibition at Otani Memorial Art Museum, Nishinomiya City. We started looking at the exhibition from the ground floor.  We couldn't find my bulbuls.  My husband teased me, "Maybe your bulbuls aren't in the exhibition!"  
But here they were at the very very end!  And my little one, who was quietly looking at all those illustrations, got very excited to find familiar illustrations and let out her voice!    

せっかく同時期に近くのギャラリーで他の入選者の展示をやっているので、わたしも少し「西宮ぎゃらり〜さんぽ」をしてきた。西宮はけっこう広く、阪急、JR、阪神と3本平行して電車が走っているが縦方向の移動はしにくく、「さんぽ」気分ではなかなか簡単には回れない。ギャラリーこもれびのミヤタタカシ作品展「迷子のうさぎと小さなおおかみ」、ギャラリーねうねうのchitose chitose個展「そこここ」、そしてわたしが搬出作業をしている間に飾り付けをはじめていたギャラリーアライの絵本原画「物語のかけら」展を拝見するので精一杯だった！　
ボローニャ展では5枚しか見られない入選者仲間の作品の続きが同じ地域で見られるのはうれしい。

見にいらしてくださったみなさま、宣伝してくださったみなさま、お菓子などの差し入れをくださったみなさま、コメントを残してくださったみなさま、そして企画から飾り付けからすべてやってくださったギャラリーの荒井さん、本当にありがとうございました。

夏の鳥見

I haven't forgotten how to draw birds, have I?
I've been busy and it's been too hot to go out for birdwatching. But we did go out a few times to see some special birds for summer.
この夏は絵本の原画作りなどで忙しかったが、夏らしい鳥の風景を見に、少しだけ出かけた。



大磯照ヶ崎のアオバト
Flock of White-bellied Green Pigeons coming to Terugasaki in Oiso to drink sea water is one of the must see scenery in summer.  
朝のほうがアオバトの飛来数も多いし、涼しい。チビも一緒に朝早く起きて出かけた。滞在時間は１時間ほどだったけれど、定点から観察できて、「今日は鳥を見たぞー！」という気分になれる。



神奈川県立　生命の星・地球博物館でやっている「アオバトのふしぎ」展も見てきた。
神奈川県の地理が俯瞰できる衛星写真が大きく展示されていて、丹沢山地から照ヶ崎へと飛んでくるアオバトを想像できたのがよかった。確かに丹沢から照ヶ崎までは、大磯丘陵により緑が連続している。
サロン・ド・小田原の学芸員のお話も聞いてきた。照ヶ崎は関東大震災でいまより2メートルほど持ち上げられたといい、今、アオバトが降り立っている岩などはその時に海面に現れた部分だという。大震災前も大磯の海岸は岩場だったが、その多くは漁港などを作る際に埋め立てられてしまったようだ。アオバトにとっては、大震災で、ちゃんと降り立てる岩場が新たに出て来たので幸運だったということか。

あまりに久しぶりに鳥をスケッチしたので、形を取るのに苦労した。やはり定期的に手は動かさなければ！

夏といえば、ツバメのねぐら入りも見たい光景。8月25日、そろそろツバメも渡りはじめてしまって、もう数は少ないかなと思ったけれど、3000羽くらいいただろうか。とっても見応えのあるねぐら入りだった！
暗くなってきても全くツバメの気配がないと、今年はここにねぐらはないのかな、などと心配になる。いつもそうだ。
でも、「あ、1羽いた」「また１羽」となり、気付いたときには空がツバメだらけになっている。どこからどうやって、同じ時間にそこに集まって来られるのか、本当に一瞬の出来事なのだ。
ねぐら入り前に遊水池の上を飛び回り、水を飲む。
だんだん本当に暗くなり、気付くと飛んでいるのはツバメからコウモリへと入れ替わっている。

夏に見たい花といえばカラスウリ！
昼間の散歩中に夫がとってきたつぼみは、水に挿しておいたらちゃんと花開いた。
白い花なので、久しぶりにアクリルガッシュを出してスケッチした。



翌日の夕方、さらに小さかったつぼみも開きはじめたので観察。



ちょっと水の吸い上げが悪かったのか、開く速度が遅く、完全には開かなかったけれど、開く様子が分かっておもしろかった。
