Bramblings on the electric wire.

(Greater Spotted Eagle)

We stopped by at the estuary of the Kumagawa river to look for Pallas's Gull, a very rare bird, which comes to the estuary every winter. There were lots of Herring Gulls, some Saunder's Gulls, a few Black-headed Gulls but no Palas's Gull. It was getting dark so I gave up trying to identify gulls and instead, I just watched the beautiful sunset...much more fun.

The main purpose of the trip was to see cranes. We visited both of the two winter homes of cranes, Kumage in Yamaguchi and Izumi in Kagoshima.

(Hooded Crane at Kumage)

It was an unusual day. The begining was when I was eating lunch at the school cafeteria, an e-mail from my mother said "Gyozas came!".
Coming back home, gyozas were really there in the freezer. They were presents from my friend from kindergarten!! When we were small, her mother used to bring us hand made gyozas very often.

And seeing my desk, I was surprised again. Because it was transformed into a zoo with an armadillo, a frog, an owl, a future owl, a stork, a gingerbread boy in addition to the orangutan that I already have. They were presents from my host grandparents in the States.

The gyozas tasted just like old time with lots of ingredient like lotus, leek, japanese mushroom and chinese cabbage. My mother overbaked them though.

名勝

Kintai Bridge at Iwakuni, Yamaguchi prefecture

During vacation, JR(Japan Railways) sells a special ticket called Seisyun 18 ticket for only 11500 yen. With that ticket you are allowed to take unlimited rides on the local trains of JR all over Japan for five not necessarily consecutive days.
It's very cheep but you can't ride on Shinkansen nor limited express.
During this winter vacation I went all the way to Kyusyu island with this ticket. Since I could only use local trains, on the first day, I had to change trains 9 times to get to Yamaguchi, the western most prefecture of Honshu!

CCC

毎年、恒例のCCC(クリスマス・コーモラント・カウント)。

I was on a bridge to count the number of great cormorants on the early morning of December 21st. Dawning was like a James Whistler's painting. That morning was amazingly warm. Usually, I would tremble using instant hand warmers and wearing a cap and gloves. But this year, I could fill in a survey form without gloves on.

(Juvenile Great Cormorant)

Uso (Bullfinch) charm of Dazaifu Tenman-gu, a shinto shirine. Because Tenman-gu enshrines Sugawara no Michizane, a god of academic achievements, I gave one charm to my cousin who is studying for the entrance examination.

A Happy New Year!
