恩田陸の『月の裏側』を読み、はと笛をもらい、いつか行きたいと思っていた柳川に立ち寄った。こたつの入ったどんこ舟に乗り川下り。小説のようにノスタルジックな町だ。
Yanagawa in Fukuoka is famous for the moats around the town. Built in Edo era, they were used as flood control as well as the defense moat of a castle. There are narrow points underneath bridges that speed up the water flow after passing them. The openings are tipically shaped as V so that they can be accommodated both during dry season and flood.
I read that people used its water for their daily use until around 1930s. People drain the moats once a year to clean them.
I hope the klongs in Bangkok will be as clean as this moats...
