ナルニア国のクリスマス2020

今日は銀座のナルニア国で、原画展示のための作業をしてきた。

金曜日から、ナルニア国のクリスマス2020　岸野衣里子 画『クリスマスの小屋』＆東郷なりさ 画『はりねずみともぐらのふうせんりょこう』原画展がはじまる。上條由美子さんが訳された福音館書店からの新刊２冊の合同原画展だ。

会期：2020年10月30日(金)〜2021年1月4日(月) 

場所：教文館6F　ナルニア国（中央区銀座4-5-1）

My original prints of the "Hedgehog and Mole Go Ballooning" will be on show at a bookshop called Narnia in Ginza, Tokyo, along with original artworks of "The Wee Christmas Cabin" drawn by Eriko Kishino.  I feel very lucky to have this exhibition opportunity in this covid world.  

わたしのは、表紙以外は白黒ですが、岸野衣里子さんの挿絵はカラーで、とても美しい。

母の傑作の人形の家も、今回の挿絵のモデルとして展示することになった。

原画自体は、ナルニア国さんが額装、展示してくださったので、今日わたしはこの家と中の家具や小物のセッティングをした。

原画の別摺りもいくつか、小さな額に入れて販売する。

今回、新たに作ったグッズ、はりねずみともぐらの一筆箋も！

100冊にサインという名のハリネズミの落書きも入れた。上條由美子さんとのダブルサイン本になっている。

地域の自然を守るタオル・西表島

The new Iriomote series of the "towels to help protecting the local nature" is out now.
Iriomote is one of Okinawan islands full of special species.
わたしが刺繍デザインをしている太平電機株式会社の「地域の自然を守るタオル」に西表島のラインナップができた。

 

新作はこの写真のカンムリワシ、キンバト、イリオモテヤマネコの３種類。これにリュウキュウアカショウビン、アオウミガメ、アカウミガメが加わった6種類が西表島大原港のターミナル内にあるお土産店「ヤマネコ商店」にて販売される。
太平電機さんに直接お問い合わせいただいても買うことができます。

The new species are the Crested Serpent Eagle, the Emerald Dove and the Iriomote Cat.

今回も、何度も刺繍をしてくれる業者とやり直しを重ねて作った。キンバトは、お腹が太ってしまって、何度も減量作戦することに。

何色のタオル地にするかもいつも悩むのだが、一緒に販売する他の種との兼ね合いで決まることが多い。

イリオモテヤマネコは、はじめ横向きを考えていたのだが、機械の都合で刺繍ができる範囲が決まっており、それに横幅を合わせると顔があまりに小さくなり、細かすぎて刺繍できないというので、顔が大きくなるように正面に描き直した。それでも、他のタオルより刺繍が一回り大きく、なかなか迫力あるものに！

右は少し前に作ったのに紹介し損ねていた、アマミノクロウサギの徳之島バージョン。徳之島には、後ろ足の一部が白い「白足袋」と呼ばれる地域変異タイプが生息しているらしい。左は奄美本島のバージョン。

アカウミガメは、当初は空色のタオル地だったのだが、アオウミガメと合わせて夜シリーズの雰囲気をより出すために、グレーに変更された。

Oiseaux — Des alliés à protéger

Yesterday evening, the artist's copies of "Oiseaux—Des alliés à protéger" finally arrived to my place!
This is a French nonfiction book on birds written by an ornithologist, Philippe J. Dubois, which I illustrated with watercolour, published by La Martinière jeunesse.
待ちに待ったフランスの絵本がようやく届いた。 

 フランスの鳥類学者Philipe J. Dubois氏が文章を書き、わたしがイラストを描いた絵本だ。 

『Oiseaux—Des alliés à protéger』 

「鳥—守るべき仲間」という意味のようだ。題名も途中で変わったりしたので、わたしの中では最後まで「フランスの」というプロジェクト名だった……！

ネットでも日本のページでは買えそうにないので、手に入れるのは難しそう。

There are nearly fifty illustrations in there. 

It was a hard project with a tight deadline in the covid circumstance. I worked so intensely for several weeks this spring without looking back, which was a very different experience from working with my Japanese publisher. So I was a bit scared to look at the final book. But I am glad to see it printed beautifully.

イラストを引き受けるにあたって送られて来た契約書も、これに沿って絵を描いてくれという文章も全部フランス語で送られてきたので、なかなか苦労したプロジェクトだった。内容はわたしもグーグル翻訳で読んだだけなのだが、鳥は恐竜だったという話にはじまり、種分化や収斂進化の話、環境に適応して様々な能力を身につけた鳥の話、そしてメインは現在、鳥が直面している環境破壊や気候変動といった問題について語られている。驚いたのは60ページほどの本の中で、過去と現在合わせて4見開きも、狩猟について書かれていたこと。日本にいると、狩猟が鳥の減少の大きな要因だとはまったく感じないけれど、世界では、鳥類はまだまだ狩猟圧に苦しんでいるということに改めて気付かされた。

I was happy to have a chance to draw lots of seabirds including my favorite Northern Gannets and Atlantic and Tufted Puffins. 

コブハクチョウやシロカツオドリ、ニシツノメドリ、ゴシキヒワ、コキジバトなどイギリスでよく観察した鳥から、ツメバケイやマメクロクイナ、コンゴウインコからオオウミガラスやリョコウバト、始祖鳥まで、本当にいろいろな種類を描いた。でもフランスの本だけに、多くはヨーロッパの鳥だったので、イギリスにいた３年間、毎週末のように鳥を見てほっつき歩いていたのが無駄ではなかったことになり、うれしい。 

一枚は日本っぽい絵も。

Since unfortunately, I do not understand French, I had to put the entire text into the google translation in order to illustrate.  French to Japanese translation was just not working, so I made it into English.  It wasn't easy still.  When I was reading about the rainforest, I was so puzzled by "Gurney's brief."  Not realising that is a bird name, for several minutes, I was imagining somebody only wearing a brief...!  Of course, it was the Gurney's Pitta!  

Just like this, almost all the birds' names were wrong with the automatic translation.  Surely, it won't be so difficult to let the AI learn biological names.   

The technique I used for the book is almost the same as my Sakura book.  I drew birds with watercolour, masked it and made the flat colour background with spattering technique using a brush and a screen.  For some of the water bubbles and ripples, I placed tiny paper cuts before spattering.

Magnificent Birdsのフランス語版『Envols』に続いて２冊目の、フランスの野鳥の会のロゴが入った本だ。

どんぐじ ごはん

One of her favorite things to do these days is to cook acorn meals and feed it to everyone.  I secretly wonder, though, who is actually enjoying acorns. Surely not Kingfisher!

I had a few free days this week and last week when my little one went to the nursery but I had no urgent work to do.  None of my editors had get back to me!  
I felt that I should be starting something that can be a new picture book project.  I felt bad doing nothing when I am paying a lot to the nursery and when my little one had to spend time there. 

But then, it's important to have some free time for an artist, isn't it?

In the end, I started carving another rubber stamp of my little one.  Something I would only feel like doing when she is little. 

保育園からの「おみゃーげー」。 どんぐり拾いをして、園に帰ってからみんなで山分けしたらしい。ビニール袋に名前が書いてあったので、どうやらちゃんと、それぞれが選んだどんぐりを持って帰らせてくれているらしい。

どんぐじ、かあすうり（の種）、み（トウネズミモチの実）をまぜまぜまぜ。

「なに　つくってる？」「なっとー　ごはん」ブツブツと自問自答。

一通り人形たちにあげたあと、ときどきわたしにもくれるのだが、石ころが入っていたりして、どうもマズそう。

でも、もしかして料理好きになるのではと、夫が密かに期待中。

ドングリ拾いをして、せっかくなのでドングリ観察。

夏から秋の自然観察

The air suddenly became cooler and I realised that the summer had ended.  
Around the 20th September, Bull-headed shrikes arrived to my area and now I can see one male almost everyday from my window, sitting on a big Zelkova tree announcing his existence.  Wednesday was the day when my little one went to the nursery and I was alone in the house.  I pulled out a telescope and set it toward that big tree.  The male came to perch from time to time and sketched him.  A very satisfying moment!

舞岡公園の田んぼで、ミズオオバコとオモダカ。

見つけるとうれしい、冬虫夏草のセミタケ。

On the 22nd of September, we went hawk watching. 

It was a cool breezy day. There weren't as many migrating hawks as we expected but we saw several Crested honey buzzards migrating, local Japanese Sparrowhawks, a Eastern Buzzard, an Osprey, a Goshawk, a kestrel and lots of swallows and Swifts. I guess I watched more hawks than the number I watched  this year combined so it was nice enough for me. 

武山にタカの渡りを見に行った。大抵の時間を、手ぶれ増幅装置のチビを抱っこしながら見ていたので、肝心のハチクマは描けなかったけれど、いくらかカラスをスケッチした。

チビは三鳥連の方が貸してくださったアウトドアチェアが気に入ってご満悦で座っていてくれたので、ノートと鉛筆を渡して、しばしスケッチ時間がとれた。

ちょうどそこに飛んできたノスリ！

しばらくしたら 「カラス　かいて」 「トトロ　かいて」 「かさ　かいて」 「カラス　かさ　かいて」 「あめ　かいて」といつも通りの描いて描いて要求がはじまり、こんなことに。

はーぺこ

今年はベランダのレモンにイモムシが付かなくて一安心と思っていたら、8月末になって終齢幼虫を何匹も発見！　しかも卵から孵ったばかりの糞みたいなやつもいっぱいいる。

Very hungry caterpillars found on our precious lemon tree.  

レモンも大事なので、ちょっと数匹はごめんなさいとさせていただいたが、数匹は放置。終齢になって旅に出てしまい見つからなかったのも数匹いるけれど、２匹を捕獲。

Prepupa of the Asian Swallowtail. いつのまにか前蛹になっていたこの個体、仕事中ずっと気にしてみていたのに蛹化せず、夜になってもせず、朝起きたら蛹になっていた。

こっちは、ぼうっとしていたら逃げ出してしまい、テーブルに放置されていたパイナップルのクラウンで固まっているのが発見された。ちょうど前蛹になるところで、帯糸を輪くぐりする瞬間をみることができた。それからおよそ１日後の昨日、ちょうどお昼を食べ終わったときに、モゾモゾしはじめ、蛹化した！

「はーぺこ　さなぎ　なっちゃった！」

 Yesterday, just after lunch, we could observe one of the caterpillars became pupa!

蛹はどちらも数時間したら「ちゃいろ　なっちゃった！」

越冬しそうだなあ。

中秋の名月

Full moon tonight!
We watched it rises from the cloud and it was really orange.

近所の絵本文庫のミニお話会は『おつきさまこんばんは』だった。 

18時頃、夜のお散歩に出たら、ちょうどオレンジ色のお月さまが雲から顔を出したところで、「まんまる おつきさん。ひろい　うちゅうに　ぽっかり　うかんでいる(『14ひきのおつきみ』)」のが見られた。
