　ダルマインコ（Red-breasted Parakeet）
At first we were all delighted to see this parakeet, but when we found out that there were so many of them, we didn't even bother to use binoculars saying "Ah, parakeet again..."

森の夜

　At 20:30, we walked into the forest with the nature guide following a line of oil lamps. In an open space, we watched lots of insects gathering on a white cloth lit by electric lamps. After eating some traditional Thai snacks, we lay down on the ground and watched stars. Orion looked upside-down compared to that seen in Japan.
　夜の昆虫ウォッチング。ガの仲間、セミの仲間というくらいにしか分からないけれど、間近で見られるので楽しい。今年はハゴロモの仲間？が異常発生しているとのことだった。翌日、森の中を歩いたときも、白いハゴロモの幼虫がびっしりついた葉がたくさんあった。
　虫を見終え、一通りお菓子を食べたあとは、地面に寝転がりライトをすべて消した。涼しい夜の空気とまだ温かい地面が心地よかった。あれがスナック・ヤイ（大犬座）、こっちがスナック・レック（子犬座）、この３つの星でサームリアム（三角形）、この星の集まりはルーク・カイ（鶏の子という意味で、プレアデス星団のこと）……。説明は全部タイ語だったけど、ときどき分かるとうれしい。

My friend gave me the racket, actually a fan and I picked up the shuttlecocks, the seeds of a tree in the deciduous forest.

シマハッカン（Siamese Fireback）
In Thai, pheasants and firebacks are called Kaifaa which means sky chicken. The Siamese Fireback is the national bird of Thailand and evaluated as Near Threatened （準絶滅危惧種）of the IUCN Red list of Threatened Species.

希少種らしいが、サケラートでは人馴れしてしまっているせいか、夕方になると道路にたくさん出てくる。わたしもピックアップトラックの荷台に乗って（日本では違法行為？！）、森の中に連れて行ってもらい、目の前で見ることができた。ちょっと野性味にはかけるけど、迫力満点ではある。

Teng Rung Forest

　We walked around the Teng Rung Forest, the Dry Deciduous Forest. I learned that both Teng and Rung are the names of the typicall trees of this tipe of forest.

　乾燥落葉樹林の典型的な2つの葉っぱ。雨緑樹林の１種なのだろうか。気候区分も植生区分もいろいろな名前がありすぎて、よく分からない。

The big orange sheaths are Fakmai Daeng's(Xylia xylocarpa:マメ科キシリア属ピンカド). And the fan like seeds are called Pradu（Pterocarpus:マメ科シタン属）.

Sakaerat

　北部の鳥ツアーの2日後、今度はバンコクの東にあるSakaerat環境研究センターの森へ友人たちと行ってきた。研究の拠点ではあるのだが、わたしたちはグリーンツーリズムのプログラムに参加し、遊んできた。

　カノム・ドークチョーク（Khanom DookJook）
We became temporary apprentices of this khanom (sweets) to open up a hawker's stand!? It looked so easy but when I tried, it became like some crumbles rather than a dook (flower).
カノム・ドークチョークは花型をしたパリパリのお菓子だ。

森の花

　
　鳥を探すのに疲れて（何しろ1日中バードウォッチングしてたのだ！）、地面に座ろうと思ったら、小さな花が咲いていた。上から落ちてきたマツの葉に埋もれている。

　There are too many spieces of birds for me to remember in Thailand, let alone plants. If you know the names of these flowers, please let me know!!

　ハイガシラホンセイインコ（Grey-headed Parakeet）
This bird is my favorite during the birdwatching trip. It stayed at the top of the tree for about half an hour. So I was able to draw it very well. The leader of the tour, who is also a famous wildlife artist, told me to draw the same bird again and again as it moves.

タカサゴモズ（Long-tailed Shrike）
コテージにたどり着いても、日が落ちるまでは周辺にいる鳥を探した。何しろ"普通の鳥"がわたしには珍しい。でもタイ人の参加者もやっぱり鳥を探していた。３日間鳥ばかりなんて、よほどの鳥好きしか参加しないかな。

　キノコを干しているところ。こんな風景を見ながら休憩をした。バンコクで買ったものの食べ損ねて持ってきてしまったローティー・サイマイというお菓子を出したら、タイ人の参加者が久しぶりに食べた！とすごく喜んでくれた。いつでも食べられると思うと、食べないものかもしれない。ちなみにローティー・サイマイはクレープ生地でサトウキビでできた綿菓子をクルクルと巻いて食べるお菓子だ。

　We watched birds at a small village near the border with Burma. People in the village welcomed us warmly although we--a group of people from Bangkok and Japan --barged into their backyards. Upon leaving, some of our members bought peaches from them out of gratitude. So, this could be called green tourism.


　50年前に雲南からビルマ経由でタイに入ってきた民族だという。日常は中国語を使っているらしく、玄関には縦に漢字が書かれていた。
　わたしくらいの若いお母さんがこどもの世話をしていた。"生きている"ことがひしひしと伝わるような生活だ。それにしても、干している隙から洗濯物が砂で汚れてしまっている！
