かやぶきの里

京都市内から山陰線で40分ほどの園部駅からさらに1時間ほどバスに乗った山の中にある美山町のかやぶきの里で一泊した。美山町にはいまも約180棟のかやぶきの家が残っているそうで、かやぶきの里集落は50戸のうち38戸がかやぶき屋根だ。国の重要伝統的建造物群保存地区として選定されているが、多くの家は商業目的ではなく、まだ個人宅として使われているから、テーマパークのようになってしまわず、昔ながらの農村の雰囲気が残っている。



We spent two days in Kayabuki-no-sato (village of thatched houses) in Miyama, Kyoto.  People are still living in these traditional houses there so when you visit the place, you feel like you are in the village several decades ago.



どの家も「雪割り」と呼ばれる一本の棒を屋根の上に乗せており、それを５本の千木が支えている。かやぶきの里には一戸だけ７本の千木で雪割りを支えている家があり、それが小さな藍美術館だ。世界中で藍染めアーティストとして展示活動をしている新道弘之氏のスタジオでもあり、インスタレーション、藍染めのコレクションを飾るスペースにもなっている。



We visited the Little Indigo Museum founded by Hiroyuki Shindo, a world famous indigo artist. He showed us the book called Indigo published by the British Museum and demonstrated how to dye cloth specially for us! We really enjoyed talking with him and leaning about indigo dyeing.

美山地区を紹介した美術番組が来月頭に放送されるようで、そのなかにこの小さな藍の美術館も出てくるそうだ。うちはNHK BSは入らないけど・・・。

We stayed a night in a thatched roof cottage!   In the evening, only the top of the mountain turned pink by the setting sun.
The evening meal was chicken Sukiyaki. There is a chicken farm in the village so chicken and fresh egg are famous there.



In the morning, I slipped out of the cottage before breakfast and painted the misty scenery.



The village was a very good birdwatching place as well. We saw daurian redstarts, bull-headed shrikes, meadow buntings, rustic buntings, yellow-throated buntings, a Japanese green woodpecker as well as many black kites hanging around.

We did a long walk by the river, too. There were two brown dippers and a kingfisher!

秋の京都

Toriimoto in Sagano area, Kyoto. I painted this picture sitting in a ditch along the road!
When I discovered that Sagano area in Kyoto is very picturesque and a little quieter than noisy main part of the city, I decided to go back with my landlady from Cambridge, who I met up in Kyoto after I said good-bye to the Art Safari tour.



愛宕念仏寺（Atago-nenbutsu-ji）
比較的に新しいお寺なので訪れる人が少ないようだが、1981年〜1991年の間に各地からの参拝者の手によって彫られたユニークな石像が集められており、とても見応えがあった。上を向いて祈っている人、ひげのおじいさん、ギターを弾いているのから晩酌をしているのまで！



祇王寺 （Gio-ji）
平清盛のひとときの寵愛を得た祇王が仏門に入り、尼となったお寺。明治初年に廃寺となったあと、明治28年に再建されたので建物などは新しいけれど、十数種類のコケの絨毯が広がる庭が素敵だった。コケの上に寝そべりたい。



哲学の道の南にある永観堂（Eikando）
遊びにきてくれたケンブリッジの家主のおばさんと3時間ほどここでのんびり過ごした。有名なお寺をいくつもまわるより、どこかをじっくり見るほうがいい。

Art Safari in Japan

I joined first part of the Art Safari's Japan tour to help out. We spent two days in Kyoto and a day in Nara.
イギリスからのスケッチツアーのお手伝いで秋の京都に行ってきた。もちろん混んではいたけれど、さすが京都。紅葉はとてもきれいだった。ツアーは8人のお客さんとリーダーがひとり。それに日本人のガイドがついた。スケッチによいエリア、お寺、神社に行き、その中では自由時間をとって、好きなところで絵を描いたり、アーティスティックな目でのんびり見て回ったりした。

There were too much to do in Kyoto. We wanted to see a lot so it was soon time to move on before I finish this painting of Heian shrine.

金閣寺の出口付近のお茶屋。秋の京都は形よりも色だから、絵の具を出す余裕がないときには、色鉛筆が役立った。



It was very peaceful to sit by the Sarusawa Pond in Nara and sketch the scenery of Five-story pagoda.
一緒に座っていた参加者のひとりであるテキスタイル・デザイナーから、どんな風に仕事を受けるのか、どうやってデザインを作っていくのかなどの話が聞けて、とてもおもしろかった。

Autumn activity records

ジャパン・バード・フェスティバルが無事に終わった。
鳥という対象に、趣味、ボランティア、仕事と様々な形で関わっている人みんなが年に一度集まる不思議なお祭りだ。
Last weekend was the Japan Bird Festival. It is a Japanese version of the bird fair but more like a "festival" than a "fair" as the name suggests. There are many tent booths of non profit organisations showing their works as well as little shops selling bird related items. There are also several exhibitions of wildlife arts, bird carvings and bird photos. And I think the biggest difference from the British Bird Fair is that the festival is free entrance.



This is my corner at the Wildlife Art Exhibition during the festival. Picture on the right, "Bull-headed Shrike and Persimmons" was the image I made out of the sketches from last autumn at the orchards near my house.  And this print got sold! I am very very happy!



ワイルドライフアート協会のテントブースの様子。いつも会員の方々のご好意に甘えて、あまりお手伝いが出来ないにも関わらず、オリジナル版画などを置かせていただいている。今年は会員作の絵本、本がずらりと並んだ。
そして今年、ワイルドライフアート協会はジャパン・バード・フェスティバルで優れた内容の展示をしている団体に送られる最優秀賞であるオオバン賞をいただくことができた！　うれしいですね！　会員のみなさま、お世話になりました。



今年もバードウォッチングの旅行会社ワイバードのブースで、ブックカバーや鳥のお手玉「きびだんご」シリーズなどを売らせていただいた。いつも遊びにきて、グッズを買ってくださるみなさま、ありがとうございました。本当に多くの方に支えられているなと実感します。

最近、とてもうれしいメールを２つもらった。

IOCのあとカリフォルニアに旅立っていったカンムリウミスズメの絵は、ウミスズメのマグカップやバードカービングとともに飾られているそうだ！

そして知り合いが、Mumsnet Book of Animal Storiesのハリネズミの話を熱心に読んでいる写真を送ってくれた！

◆◇◆大磯 宿場祭り◆◇◆
今年、わたしは参加できないのですが、母と水鶏堂グッズは例年通り、アオバトを研究しているグループ「こまたん」のブースに顔を出させていただきます。
日時：2014年11月9日(日）10時〜15時
場所：大磯の旧東海道山王町松並木(大磯駅より徒歩10分)
雨天は決行、ただし台風の場合は中止です。

第4回フィールドスケッチ会

Six of us had a sketching day on the 26th of October at Kasai Rinkai Park. It was finally a fine day for us to sketch after canceling so many events due to the rain and the typhoon.
雨や台風で３度も中止に追い込まれたフィールドスケッチ会を10月26日、ようやく開催することができた。場所は葛西臨海公園。
スケッチはできなかったけれど、渡りの途中らしいコシアカツバメの群れが10羽ほど飛んで行ったのと、キビタキの♀を見ることができた。

お披露目会の場で、みんなでスケッチを見比べていて線の話になった。わたしの線は男っぽいらしい。

Autumn Sketches

I got several illustration and non illustration works to do and started to feel pressure of deadlines.  But I can not help going out to sketch sometimes. I love the time when I sit in front of anything interesting with a pencil and a sketchbook.



7月にスケッチした葉山の棚田の秋。



アップするのがだいぶ遅くなってしまったヒガンバナのスケッチ。



Grey-streaked Flycatcher
秋の渡り鳥と言えばヒタキ類。横浜自然観察の森の10月の鳥のくらし発見隊に久しぶりに遊びにいったら、エゾビタキ、キビタキ♀が見られた。コサメビタキを見た人もいたようだ。この個体は、もう解散というときになって、センター前の枯れ木のてっぺんにとまってくれた。時々飛び出していって虫をとっては、同じ木に戻ってくる。飛んでしまったと思っても、望遠鏡をそのままにしておけば、またちゃんと鳥が戻ってきて同じポーズをしてくれる。ヒタキのうれしい習性。

若い個体だから、なめられているのか、近すぎるときは何もされないと分かっているのか、すぐ後ろでシジュウカラが平然とちょろちょろしていた。



This poor meadow bunting hit the window, which must have being reflecting the sky, and dropped dead. He must have been on his way migrating south.  He looked so intact.  I studied him to learn the feathers and to remember the colour.  



Just now a female daurian redstart came to my house for the first time this autumn!
そしてたったいま、ジョウビタキ♀がうちの窓際に生えているクワの木にやってきた！　家の近所での今年の初認だ。

Japan Bird Festival 2014

秋はお祭りシーズン！　今年もジャパン・バード・フェスティバルに参加します。
Japan Bird Festival will be held on the 1st and 2nd of November at Teganuma lake in Abiko city, Chiba. This year, my artwork, "Bull-headed Shrike and Persimmons" is on the wildlife art exhibition's invitation postcard!

秋景色

It will be another month to go for the leaves to turn their colour in lowland but in the mountain, it is now the hight of autumn. 
Japanese Rowans were all red, Japanese Larches were starting to turn yellow and Nutcrackers were gathering food for the coming winter.



I struggled a lot to paint autumn colour.  In order to bring the bright yellow and red standing out, I have to put dark back ground, which means I need to concentrate on the erratic negative space made by leaves.



富士山の御中道からの大沢崩れ。
じっと座っていると、コロコロ、ザザザザザっと不気味な音がする。いまも少しずつ、少しずつ崩れているのだ。1日あたり10トン積みの大型ダンプカー28台分に相当する量の土砂が崩れているとか。不変に思える地形もこうやって密かに動いているのだと実感する。

御中道は富士講の巡拝地だったが、富士山に３回以上登った経験のある者にのみ許された最上級の修練の道だったという。それだけやはりこの大沢崩れなどを渡るのは危険だったのだろうか。



I was enjoying the Christmas tree game.  Here is a Nutcracker already hiding a Christmas present!
御中道は浸食谷をいくつも渡るので、大小さまざまなカラマツのクリスマスツリーがいっぱい見られる。ホシガラスはもうすでにプレゼントを隠していた。
（わたしのクリスマスツリーの絵本「Weihnachtsspuren im Winterwald」はようやく紀伊国屋、Amazonで販売を開始したらしいです！！）

ホシガラスは秋、その冬を乗り越えられるための何万個もの種子を隠すのに忙しいときは、脳の海馬領域が拡大するのだそうだ。でも春になりほかの食糧が手に入るようになると海馬は縮小して、種子の場所を忘れてしまうという。（「世界一賢い鳥、カラスの科学」より）
「カラスの科学」を訳した母は、すでにこのエピソードがどこに書かれているのか、すっかり忘れてしまっていた。どうやら一冊訳し終えると、その本のための海馬が縮小してしまうらしい。ホシガラス並みの記憶力！?

Hawk Migration

One thing I missed about Japan while I was in England was autumn hawk migration.  Looking up the vast sky for all day long and sending off the amazing number of hawks heading south is one best way to feel the season.
This year I had chances to visit two hawk watch points, Shirakabatoge mountain pass in Nagano prefecture and Iragomisaki point in Aichi prefecture.



白樺峠にて。あまりに何も飛ばないので、山際に目をこらすのに疲れてきた夕方。16時15分に引き上げましょうと決めたので、一人、二人と先に下山し始めた。そして16時14分、にわかに８羽のタカ柱ができて南西へと流れていった。やっぱり最後まで諦めないことは肝心らしい！

　

ハチクマ（Oriental Honey-buzzard）
In Japan, the main migrating hawks are the oriental honey-buzzard and the grey-faced buzzard.



みんなが飽きるまでポーズをとってくれたサメビタキ（Dark-sided flycatcher）Little birds also migrate.



伊良湖岬。初日は快晴だったのに南風が強かったせいか、ぜんぜんタカが飛ばなかった。でもビューホテルからのサンセットは美しかった。



タカが出なくても、屋上から渥美半島、神島、答志島、紀伊半島へと続く地形を眺めると、渡るタカの気分が味わえて幸せ。
