Migrating West

It's spring and I have migrated west to England again!  This time, I am just a summer visitor and won't be staying as long as swifts or cuckoos do but still, I came to enjoy the long daylight.



Since I booked a very early flight out of Japan, I stayed at my grandmother's place for a night. And this was what I found at hers, a flowering Air Plant (Bryophyllum pinnatum)!
その昔、2005年くらいだろうか、ジャパン・バード・フェスティバルを訪れたときにどこかのブースでもらったセイロンベンケイの葉を何気なく園芸好きの祖母にあげた。長径8センチくらいのただ一枚の葉で、壁にピンで刺しておいたのだ。それがいつの間にかどんどん伸びて、祖母の家を訪れるたびに増えて森のようになっていた。茎がどんどん棒状にのびて、ついに天井に届くほど。そして先日、早朝の飛行機に乗るために祖母の家を訪れたら、なんと花が咲いていた。10年近くもただ緑の葉と棒だったのに、大事に育てていた祖母もすごい。



I have already went out for birdwatching and watched 52 avocets and marsh harriers!
It's so nice to be "home" and looking up the massive sky and walking on the common land and stepping carefully across the cattle grid.

Japanese birds in winter

I was too busy to update any sketches during the last month but I had been in several fields and sketching some birds.

Japanese accentor（カヤクグリ）



夕方の林道で数十頭のニホンザルの群れに遭遇した。望遠鏡だと近すぎて絵が描けない！
サルは「顔」を意識しすぎてしまい、なかなかうまく全体が描けない。来年の年賀状を作る頃までには、うまくなりたい。



Reed buntings (オオジュリン)
この冬、オオジュリンがあまり見られないという話を耳にしていたのだが、いるところにはいるらしい！　まだ冬羽だった。動きがはやくてなかなかスケッチは難しい。



Japanese Pheasant（キジ）



横浜自然観察の森の「鳥のくらし発見隊」の最中に出てきたノスリ。つぶらな瞳が大きく見えてかわいい個体だった。雨模様でも出かけてみたご褒美？



近所の遊水池で黄色い足輪をつけたカワウの若鳥を見つけた。よし、番号を読むぞと張り切って近づいたとたんに、ぺたんと座り込んでしまった。20分経っても、30分経っても動かない。周りの個体はチョウゲンボウやヘリコプターが上を飛ぶと立ち上がったりするのに、足輪の個体だけ、まんじりともせず眠っている。40分近く待ってみたけれど時間切れ。悔しい。当の個体は頭すら上げていなかったので、スケッチはその隣の成鳥。



I hear a voice saying "are you still drawing a heron after you finished making the images for the heron book?"
Yes, I am!  

Spring has come!

Finally, I have submitted all the images for my new book about Heron today!  I've done it!
For the last few weeks I was stuck at home and printing from morning till midnight.
So now I feel like the spring has come. 



This Heron in a strong spring wind is from the nearby wash.
I thought I ought to celebrate the day I sent off my Heron yet I didn't want to do any more carving or printing so I went for painting the heron I saw earlier this month.  



今日、ついに原画を手渡した絵本「アオサギのさかなとり」は、今年の福音館書店の「ちいさなかがくのとも」11月号になります。
The book will be out in autumn this year!  
I made the illustration in mixture of linocut, vinyl engraving, stencil and rubber stamps.   Looking back this advertising image, the Heron, the fish and the colour, all changed a bit!

I've started running a series of article about my birdwatching experience in the UK on the BIRDER magazine published by Bunichisogo publisher and the above image is its adv.

ダイヤモンド富士の日

It's the time of the year again when we think of the earthquake in Tohoku. And the sun sets on Mt. Fuji in my area.



何かと忙しい時期らしい。そういえば去年もハリネズミを必死で彫っていた。今年も太陽が富士の上に沈む。駅の向こうまでひとっ走り。今日は一応、家から出た！

Perry Island

東京湾唯一の自然島、猿島に行ってきた。島、無人島といっても横須賀からフェリーで10分。
Sarushima, an only natural island in Tokyo bay is just ten min away by ferry boat from Yokosuka.  Its Japanese name, "Sarushima," means "island of monkey" although there is none on the island.  The name came from a legend of Nichiren, a famous Buddhist monk, who was led to this island by a white monkey when he was caught in a sudden rainstorm. 



When Matthew Perry came to Japan in 1853 to open the country, he, of course, found this island and wrote about it as "Perry Island."
Located at the narrowest point in Tokyo Bay, it was an important place for defending Tokyo from the sea.  Since the end of Edo era there had been gun batterirs.  



It was a "Cormorant Island" rather!

昼間はヒメウのほうが多かった。



Japanese Cormorant （ウミウ）
夕方になるとウミウがどこからか集まってきた。行動時間が違うのだろうか。



島から海を望遠鏡で眺めるとクロガモ、ヒメウそしてウミスズメが一羽浮かんでいた。東京湾側にもいるんだ！



あまり鳥影が少なかった寺家ふるさと村。それでもカシラダカの群れを発見。黄色いのを探したけれどいなかった。



I thought it was rather a rare opportunity to see both grey and Japanese wagtails at the same place, at a paddy field!

頭を真後ろから見るとこんな風に赤い線があるんだ。

第6回フィールドスケッチ会

Our sketching event entered its second year and we had the sixth one at the Shinobazunoike pond in Ueno, the same place we did the first event.  We now seem to have several regular attenders and I am very grateful to them.

風は冷たかったけれど快晴のバレンタインデー。第６回スケッチ会をまた不忍池で行った。上野という立地のせいか、不忍池というカモやカモメが間近に見られる場所だからか、初回以来初めての二桁、11名での会になった。オフィシャルブログの結果報告はこちら。



Pintail and other ducks (オナガガモ)
It is always challenging to paint the water reflection but I love it.  



Black-crowned night heron (ゴイサギ)
I used gouache for this piece.  Since I went to the special exhibition on an unfamiliar French artist called Robert Coutelas at Shoto museum in Shibuya, Tokyo, I was in the mood of trying opaque, thick paint.
It takes rather a long time to paint over in layers for field work but it is a brilliant media to catch certain atmosphere.



This time, I was focusing on shadow and light.  



During the crit, we found that several people drew the pattern at the back of the pintail!  It's interesting to know what drew people's attention.  



Common Gull （カモメ）

Happy Valentine's Day

I hope you have a sweet weekend with loved one!



In Japan, valentine's day is when girls give chocolate to someone she loves or boys in her class or club or at work.  And boys have nothing to worry except if he will get any chocolate or not!
イギリスでは、バレンタインは男女ともにカードを交換したり、プレゼントや花束を贈ったりするようだ。日本ではいつから、どういう風にチョコレート商戦になったのだろう。

ツバメの謎：ツバメの繁殖行動は進化する!?

I made some illustrations for this scientific book about barn swallow for children and teenagers by Wataru Kitamura published by Seibundoshinkousya. 
年末に必死で制作していたツバメのイラストが無事に本の形になって印刷されてきた！
著者はリトルターン・プロジェクトやLiferbirdで活躍されている北村亘氏。

I worked in linocut again for these illustrations.  

ツバメとはどんな鳥かに始まり、北村氏の研究内容であるどんな雄が雌にモテるのかや、ツバメの浮気の話まで。鳥好きでも知らないツバメの謎がたくさん出てくる本だ。



The end paper also has my swallow stamps!



ツバメの親はどうやって、お腹をすかせているヒナを見分けているのだろうか？　そんな疑問にも答えてくれる。

Foraging Bar-tailed Godwits

I felt really honored to draw a cover image for Dr. Sjoerd Duijns's thesis on Bar-tailed Godwits.
It was at the International Ornithological Congress that we met each other.  He came to our art show and looked at my portfolio and asked for this!  You can read his wonderful thesis from here.   
夏に立教大で行われた国際鳥学会での展示が縁で、オオソリハシシギの研究者、Dr. Sjoerd Duijns氏の論文集の表紙を描かせていただいた！



ヨーロッパにはオオソリハシシギが２亜種が分布していて、片方はスカンジナビア半島からシベリアにかけての地域で繁殖しアフリカで越冬するL l. lapponica。もう片方は北ヨーロッパで繁殖し、西ヨーロッパで越冬するL l. taymyrensis。その２亜種の渡りの中継地、越冬地となるオランダを中心とした西ヨーロッパでの採食行動の違いなどを調べた研究だ。
オオソリハシシギの雌雄ではくちばしの長さが違うので、オランダのワッデン海などで冬期に餌となるゴカイなどが地中深くに潜ってしまうと、雌は餌が採れても、雄は採りにくくなるのでどこかに行ってしまい、雌の比率が多くなるそうだ。逆に、より暖かく餌となる生物が地表面に残っているイギリスのThe Washではくちばしの短い雄のほうがよほど多く観察されるとか！
